Butzel Long attorney named a “2013 Honoree for Michigan Women in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly ; Jennifer E. Consiglio is one of 25 honorees to be recognized on September 26

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Jennifer E. Consiglio has been named a “2013 Honoree for Michigan Women in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. She is one of 25 female attorneys who will be honored during a luncheon on September 26, 2013 at the Detroit Marriott in Troy. Honorees were selected by a committee based on their outstanding professional accomplishments and mentoring/community involvement.

Consiglio, based in Butzel Long’s Bloomfield Hills office, has a varied business law practice focused on business transactions, securities law, and general business matters. She has extensive experience representing buyers and sellers in merger, acquisition, and divestiture transactions in both the public and private sectors. Consiglio also has substantial experience in advising clients in raising capital through private equity and venture capital financing, private placements of debt and equity securities and public offerings. She regularly counsels clients in other complex transactional, corporate and securities matters, such as joint ventures and cross-border transactions, SEC and blue sky compliance and reporting, and investor relations.

She is dedicated to pro bono service and mentoring. Consiglio is the Co-Chair of Butzel Long’s Pro Bono Committee. Detroit Region Ranks 10th in Nation in Patents Granted

Innovation is critical to succeeding in the global market. In this hypercompetitive world, the number of patents granted stands as a key measure in demonstrating the intellectual investment in the Detroit region. Michigan continues to thrive in this field, ranking 7th in the number of patents granted in 2012.  

While regional patent data is not yet available for 2012, the Detroit-Livonia-Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area ranks 10th in patent producing metropolitan regions, including a 28% growth in patents granted from 2009-2011.  Levels of patents granted in 2011 exceed that of peak years over the last decade.

Infrastructure gains such as the opening of the Elijah J. McCoy United States Patent and Trademark Office in Detroit in 2012, the first satellite patent office, have provided a foundation in supporting this intellectual capital. There are nearly 25 patent law firms in the Detroit region, with over 400 practicing intellectual property lawyers. Here at the Detroit Regional Chamber, the intellectual property statistics continue to be a critical piece of communicating the region’s skills and competitive advantages.

Michigan also ranks highly in other key indicators including:

  • R & D Centers – There are over 375 research and development centers in Michigan related to the automotive industry alone.
  • Venture Capital Activity – Michigan ranks 15th nationally in venture capital activity, with $1.5 billion in capital under management in 2012.
  • Engineering Talent – Michigan has the highest concentration of mechanical engineers of any state.

 

Business Attraction Following Up on Leads at Military Vehicles Exhibition & Conference

On July 31, the Business Attraction team attended the Military Vehicles Exhibition and Conference at COBO Center in Detroit resulting in two leads of companies interested in locating a sales offices and future manufacturing within the Detroit region. The companies – part of the 58 exhibitors the team visited – both are interested in connecting better with the region’s defense, auto and aerospace industries. While fewer companies were present due to the impact of federal budget cuts, exhibitors presented a unique array of specialized equipment for the defense industry that can be applied to aerospace and automotive industries. Regional Partners Host Location Consultants at NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 Event

Business Attraction joined key regional partners in hosting 14 national location consultants and 17 CEOs at the Third Pure Michigan Test Drive Site Consultant Event on August 16-18. The visit included a community tour, VIP access to the racetrack and numerous other engaging activities touting the region. Participants heard testimonials from local business leaders and executive management and learned from Detroit Future City on how to translate the strategic framework into real progress in revitalizing Detroit. As a result of visit, the Business Attraction team will be providing market intelligence and research for prospective attraction projects.

 

Innostate, Pure Michigan Business Connect Introduce General Electric Global Research to Southeast Michigan’s Advanced Manufacturers

The Detroit Regional Chamber’s Innostate program partnered with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC) program to facilitate a two-day visit to suppliers in Southeast Michigan by General Electric Global Research last month. As part of the effort, 13 pre-selected companies traveled to GE’s Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center in Van Buren Township and toured the manufacturer’s shop floor. Several InnoState companies that met with GE included Roush Industries and Protomatic. 

GE Global Research has sought out Southeast Michigan manufacturers as partners due to the quality of the regional supply chain. GE Global Research provides innovative technology for all of GE’s businesses. Global Research has developed some of GE’s most important technology over the company’s history, including work in medical imaging, energy generation technology, jet engines and lighting.

The Chamber originated and developed the “Connection Point” program, which joined with PMBC in December of 2012, and is a strategic partner of PMBC programming in Southeast Michigan. For more information on PMBC, click here.
