Chamber’s Business Attraction Efforts Lead to New Investment, Jobs in Southeast Michigan

Business Attraction Team Collaborates with Regional Partners to Bring Keynote Systems, APAG Elektronik AG to Southeast Michigan

Two tech-based businesses are expanding operations in Southeast Michigan following direct assistance from the Detroit Regional Chamber and its partners. This month, California-based Keynote Systems announced plans to expand in downtown Detroit, creating 53 hi-tech jobs and investing more than $450,000 in the region.

keynote-systemsThe Chamber’s Business Attraction team provided a two-day tour of the city, partnering with Ann Arbor SPARK, Detroit Economic Growth Corp. and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) to market the city’s technology assets.

In an email, Shawn White, executive vice president for Keynote Systems, said he is excited to expand the company’s operations in Detroit.

“It is exciting to be part of something bigger than just hiring smart people and growing Keynote,” he said. “I think the Detroit community, and Michigan in the larger context, has a bright future and I’m glad we’re going to be a part of it.”

apag-electronics-logoIn May, APAG Elektronik AG, a Switzerland-based electronics design and manufacturing firm, announced that it would open a sales office in Troy this year. Phase one of the project will bring $350,000 in investment and five new jobs to the region.

Representatives from APAG met with the Chamber’s Business Attraction team, as well as representatives from Oakland County and the MEDC, who provided data on Oakland County at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, D.C. in March.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said in a press release that partnering with the Chamber at the SelectUSA Summit was a big success.

“We are proud of the business climate we’ve created for international companies and the infrastructure available to support their business,” Patterson said.

The company is also considering an electronics manufacturing facility in the county next year.

Chamber’s HealthForward Program Offers New Tools for Business

The Detroit Regional Chamber’s HealthForward program recently partnered with Consumer Reports to pilot Making Healthy Choices, a free toolkit for employers to help their employees make better health care decisions. The toolkit includes a co-branded website, videos and a mobile app, all of which provide easy-to-understand information to employees about what medical procedures may be unnecessary or ineffective.

Meijer Expands Presence, Adds Jobs in Detroit with Second Store

Meijer Inc. marked the opening of its second store in the city of Detroit last week with a ribbon cutting ceremony, pledging more jobs and partnerships with Michigan food growers to boost the state’s rising food economy.

At the 2015 Mackinac Policy Conference, Mark Murray, co-CEO of Meijer, stressed the importance of the grocer’s presence in Detroit, sharing that he is excited to see the continued growth and investment in the city. IPS Technology Services Wins an Enterprise Application Development Project for a Manufacturing Company

TROY – June 6, 2015 – IPS Technology Services has recently signed a cloud-based application development contract to develop a portal for a Lansing-based manufacturing company.

Under this contract, IPS Technology Services will develop a portal to create an Elance-style information exchange for users to arrange services from each other. This portal will also enable retailers and wholesale manufacturers to set up an electronic storefront to showcase their products and sell directly to all users. Finally, this portal will also allow a general contractor to piecemeal products and combine them into their own offerings to clients.

This project began in May, with IPS Technology Services scheduled to complete the first phase by June 15—at which point the design and coding will start.

Butzel Long immigration attorney Chairs AILA Global Immigration Forum in Washington, D.C.
