The cannabis business is booming, with more than 100 businesses operating in the Detroit region from sole proprietorships to large enterprises. Is your company curious about how to collaborate and engage with this rapidly growing industry?

Michigan residents have seen economic benefits from the existing medical cannabis market, with more than $500 million in legal medicinal sales and over 10,000 jobs. Studies have projected that the combined medical and recreational sales in Michigan could reach between $1.6 to $2.2 billion.

The Chamber aims to provide resources for the coming changes to Michigan businesses including the economic outlook, diversification opportunities, and how businesses can integrate into the industry.

What Has Changed

Last year, Michigan voters moved to legalize the adult use of cannabis by a comfortable 56-44 percent margin.

The recreational proposal would:

  • Allow individuals age 21 and older to purchase, possess and use marijuana and marijuana-infused edibles and grow up to 12 marijuana plants for personal consumption.
  • Impose a 10-ounce limit for marijuana kept at residences and require that amounts over 2.5 ounces be secured in locked containers.
  • Create a state licensing system for marijuana businesses, including growers, processors, transporters and retailers.
  • Allow municipalities to ban or restrict marijuana businesses.
  • Permit commercial sales of marijuana and marijuana-infused edibles through state-licensed retailers, subject to a new 10-percent tax earmarked for schools, road and municipalities where marijuana businesses are located.

Employer Impact

The Chamber’s “The Business of Cannabis: Impact and Opportunities” event showcased the potential of Michigan’s already booming cannabis industry. Speakers shed light on the future of drug testing in the workplace, economic opportunities in the industry, and workforce development through criminal record expungement.
