All public and private high schools in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties are eligible to participate in the challenge.

Contest Entry Period

The Student Aid Challenge for Southeast Michigan: Race to the FAFSA Line has begun. Register here. Winners will be announced shortly after the contest concludes in March.

School Representation

At the time of registration, schools will submit contact information for the following individuals:

  • Faculty or staff representative to serve as “FAFSA champion” (usually a counselor or teacher)
  • Principal or assistant principal
  • Student leader who will put together a student team to lead local social media strategy.

Prizes Are Limited To:

  1. A grand prize of an “All Night Senior Party” sponsored by Emagine Events for the school with the most innovative strategy AND a FAFSA completion rate of over 80%, and $1,000 will be awarded to the counseling department at the grand prize winner’s school.
  2. Three VIP senior class screenings sponsored by Emagine Events for the other winning high schools according to the categories listed below.

Contest Winners

The FAFSA completion scores of participating schools will be calculated using U.S. Department of Education FAFSA submission data as a percentage of the Class of 2019 enrollment, as reported by the schools. Using this data, winners will be selected by the Detroit Drives Degrees Working Group and Race to the FAFSA Line Action Team. No purchase by either students or schools is necessary or required to win any of the prizes.

Exactly Four Schools Will Be Selected From Awards Categories Below:

Grand Prize: The grand prize winner for the 2019-2020 year will be awarded an all-night senior class party courtesy of Emagine Entertainment and other partners in addition to $1000 toward the school’s counseling budget.

The grand prize winner will be selected based on two criteria: 1) implementing the most innovative FAFSA completion strategy; and 2) achieving a minimum FAFSA completion rate of over 80% by March 2, 2020. The considerations regarding the most innovative strategy in awarding this prize include: originality of strategy, replicability to other contexts and positive impact on improving the FAFSA competition rate. Qualified members from the Detroit Drives Degrees College Working Group and the Race to the FAFSA Line Action Team will serve as judges in awarding this prize.

VIP Movie Screenings: Excluding the Grand Prize winner, exactly three schools with the most improved FAFSA completion rates from last year will be awarded movie screenings. The prizes in this category will be allocated according to county, regardless of size: Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties will each have one winner, based on the percentage of improvement in FAFSA completion since last year.

Approximate Value of the Prize

The grand prize and movie screenings provided to winners are valued at approximately $24,000 total and are not convertible to cash prizes. To attend screening, each student must provide verification that she/he submitted financial aid form.

Announcement of Winners

The Detroit Drives Degrees Working Group and Race to the FAFSA Line Action Team will notify the winning schools by email or telephone. To claim the prize, schools should follow the instructions contained in the award notification.

Contest Promotion

Counselors, campus faculty and students are responsible for coordinating campus specific marketing push to support FAFSA filings/completions on their campus. The Detroit Drives Degrees Working Group will provide schools with updated reports on FAFSA filings, so that participants can track campus progress. The Working Group and the Race to the FAFSA Line Action Team will also provide posters and flyers to promote FAFSA filings.

Individual Prize Rules:

All individual students registered to serve as “student leaders” for the Race to the FAFSA Line Challenge are eligible to win individual student prizes. The criteria for student prizes include: creativity in promoting the contest on social media, number of “likes” and “reposts” on Twitter and Instagram, and consistency of involvement throughout the duration of the campaign. Qualified members from the Detroit Drives Degrees College Working Group and the Race to the FAFSA Line Action Team will serve as judges in awarding this prize.

Unclaimed Prizes

Prizes deemed by the Detroit Drives Degrees Working Group to be undeliverable or otherwise not claimed within seven (7) days after delivery of notification will be forfeited and awarded to an alternate winner. No substitutions or exchanges (including for cash) of any prizes will be permitted.

General Release

The Grand Prize and movie screenings will be contracted out and will not be provided directly by the Detroit Regional Chamber or the Detroit Drives Degrees Working Group. Campuses selected as winners under contest rules will receive screenings from contractors and release the Detroit Regional Chamber from any liability whatsoever, waiving any and all causes of action, related to any claims, costs, injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with the contest, or delivery, misdelivery, acceptance, possession, use of or inability to use any prize (including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses and damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to or destruction of property, rights of publicity or privacy, defamation or portrayal in a false light, whether intentional or unintentional), whether under a theory of contract, tort (including negligence), warranty or other theory.
