Michigan is Home to the Brightest and Best

Ranked InstitutionsWith top universities and a dedication to research that rivals the world’s best, Michigan is continually producing and attracting top talent in a range of disciplines.

In addition to a large pool of graduates from the area’s top-rated two-year colleges, regional Detroit employers have access to graduates from the University of Michigan, ranked one of the top 20 universities in the world, in addition to Michigan State University, Wayne State University, Lawrence Tech, Oakland University and the University of Detroit Mercy.

Michigan’s colleges and universities rank:

  • In the top 10 for graduating students in each type of degree conferred (associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate and professional degrees)
  • 2nd per capita in logistics degrees
  • 3rd in science and engineering degrees

25,000 foreign students study at Michigan’s colleges and universities, and more than 133,000 students are enrolled in Southeast Michigan’s strong network of nine community colleges.

Research and Development

The University Research Corridor (URC), a collaborative partnership between the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University, is transforming, strengthening and diversifying the state’s economy. Each university received the Carnegie Foundation’s highest research university ranking.

The URC is the 3rd highest spending “Innovation Cluster” after Silicon Valley and the North Carolina Research Triangle. Together, these three universities spent a total of $1.9 billion on research and development in 2010, with a $15.2 billion annual economic impact to the region, while cultivating 71 start-ups.

Spotlight: Engineering Talent

Home to nearly 90,000 engineers, Michigan ranks No. 1 for mechanical, industrial engineers and mechanical engineering technicians, by concentration.

In 2014 alone, over 6,300 engineers graduated from Michigan universities and colleges.
