Detroit Regional Chamber President & CEO Sandy Baruah’s reaction to the news of Mary Barra becoming GM CEO

Sandy Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber: “This is a wonderful glass-ceiling moment, but I hope as a society, we’re getting used to these glass ceilings breaking. And so I’m anxious for the day when this is less news than it is today, but obviously, today it is huge news.”

“I think it sends an incredibly important message for the future talent within the auto industry. The auto industry is in a war for the best and brightest talent with other industries that are now considered sexier, and they’re not always winning that war, especially when it comes to minorities and women. And I think Mary’s ascension is a very strong message to a whole new audience of women engineers and future business leaders that I think is going to serve GM very well in the future.”
