Detroit Regional Chamber’s Political Action Committee Releases Endorsements for Detroit School Board

Full list of endorsements for Board of Education race announced

DETROIT, September 28, 2016 – Today, the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Political Action Committee (PAC) announced endorsements for the seven open seats on the Board of Education for the Detroit Public Schools Community District. The Chamber PAC identified candidates who are aligned with the Chamber’s support for high academic standards in K-12 education in order to ensure all students are prepared for careers and post-secondary education.

“A locally elected school board will be an integral part of the transformation of Detroit schools. We are excited about the caliber of these highly qualified candidates, and thank them for their willingness to step up and take on this difficult but immensely important job,” said Brad Williams, vice president of government relations for the Detroit Regional Chamber.

“Our list of endorsed candidates represents a broad cross section of our city, from business leaders to community activists and educators to faith leaders. We look forward to working with them to give Detroiters the education system to which they are entitled,” Williams added.

The Chamber, along with the business community, strongly supported returning governance of Detroit Public Schools back to a locally controlled school board. As one of the most vocal advocates for education reform in Detroit and across the state, the Chamber was also a key supporter of the financial relief legislation for DPS that was signed by Gov. Rick Snyder earlier this year.

The election in November marks a tipping point for education in Detroit. Unlike previous boards under the control of a state-appointed emergency manager, the newly elected board will have a debt-free, clean slate with more power to make decisions necessary to ensure the district’s long-term financial and academic growth. The candidates endorsed by the Chamber PAC are good stewards of taxpayer dollars whose proven turnaround expertise and collaboration will be essential to safeguard the future of Detroit schools.
