Flint Challenge Raises $250,000 for Flint Child Health and Development Fund

Between donations from attendees and a generous fundraising match from the Charles Stewart Mott (C.S.) Foundation, the 2016 Mackinac Policy Conference donated over $250,000 to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund.

Detroit Regional Chamber President Sandy Baruah announced the Flint Challenge in his opening remarks on Wednesday, encouraging attendees to donate online via the MLive Conference App or online through the Chamber website. Over the next 72 hours, 100 donations were made by attendees totaling more than $125,000. Several attendees and organizations made generous donations of $10,000 or more to the Fund during the Conference:

  • Detroit Manufacturing System
  • Lear Corp.
  • Michael Shields
  • Minnie Miracle Foundation
  • The Remington Group
  • Soave Enterprises

The C.S. Mott Foundation had previously announced a 1:1 match of all donations made to the Fund up to $5 million until Dec. 31, bringing the total donation amount to more than $250,000.

In line with the Conference pillar of investing in the future, the Fund serves the long-term health and development needs of Flint children exposed to lead. Mona Hanna-Attisha, director of the Pediatric Residency Program at Hurley Medical Center and assistant professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University, talked in-depth about the Fund in a Mackinac Moment on the first day of Conference main stage programming. In addition, Flint Mayor Karen Weaver and C.S. Mott Foundation President Ridgway White were joined by Lt. Gov. Brian Calley on stage the following day to discuss the ways in which they are partnering together to build trust and a better future for Flint’s residents.
