Future Framework

By Mark Hackel

Hackel, MarkManufacturing is the bedrock of our region’s economy. All one has to do is look around to see the tremendous impact this industry has had locally. In southeast Michigan, we possess a world-class collection of manufacturing facilities and operations that serve as epicenters of investment and major job generators.

In particular, Macomb County feels a strong connection to the manufacturing sectors. Macomb County is home to nearly 1,600 manufacturing establishments which employ more than 74,000 individuals. The capabilities of these businesses are vast and advanced including everything from machining, tool and die, research and development, fabrication, assembly, engineering and so much more. The county’s legacy of production and unrivaled concentration of manufacturing assets have made Macomb a preferred operations center for production-based industries.

This is why every year since 2013, Macomb County has been a proud supporter of Manufacturing Day℠, a national celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of workers. This celebration looks to address common misperceptions about manufacturing by giving companies an opportunity to open their doors and connect with high school students. These coordinated efforts, highlight what manufacturing is, and as important what it isn’t. By working together during and after Manufacturing Day℠, we have begun to address the skilled labor shortage, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry.

Mark Hackel QuoteHere in Macomb County, we showcase dozens of manufacturers during our Manufacturing Day℠ celebration, which is on Oct. 2. Our goal is to provide opportunities for 2,000 high school students to see the industry in action and meet people who are driving the industry. In fact, our celebration has become one of the largest coordinated Manufacturing Day℠ events in the nation. This year we have expanded our efforts and are working with Wayne and Oakland counties to spread the impact of this event.

Macomb County is committed to Manufacturing Day℠ because there are positive trends in manufacturing that can help lead to economic opportunities for so many. It is imperative for us to prepare our future workforce to fill the emerging needs of our manufacturing operations. It also allows the students to see that there are many opportunities to have a successful career here in Macomb County, and that this region has the ability to offer them a fulfilling life.

Local manufacturers are the foundation of Manufacturing Day℠. By hosting tours, our manufacturing partners showcase the incredible capabilities of their facilities, and connect with future employees. These connections are vital to the success of manufacturing in our region. By showing high school students the technological advancements of these businesses, they can see a prosperous future in manufacturing-related occupations.

The future of manufacturing is right here in southeast Michigan. We have the power to take actions that will help ensure that this field remains a strong contributor to Macomb County and the region’s economy for many generations to come.
