Detroit Regional Chamber Receives $5 Million to Promote Workforce Development

DETROIT - The Detroit Regional Chamber announced today that it has received a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to implement regional workforce development, economic expansion and entrepreneurial growth initiatives.  The funding will support programs, services and technology that advance the goal of creating a world-class workforce and improving economic development in the Detroit Region.

The grant is the result of the Detroit Region’s recent designation as a Workforce Innovation and Regional Economic Development (WIRED) community.  The Chamber, in cooperation with other organizations across Southeast Michigan, is overseeing the WIRED initiative.

“Workforce development is an integral component of economic development,” said Richard E. Blouse Jr., CCE, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber.  “This grant will provide much-needed funding for the many collaborative initiatives underway to transform the Detroit Region’s economy in the face of the intense global competition confronting Michigan.”

The Detroit Regional Chamber spearheaded a collaborative effort beginning in 2005 to secure federal funds through the Department of Labor.  These efforts culminated with Assistant Secretary of Labor Emily Stover DeRocco visiting the Detroit Region last December to meet with business and community leaders and to designate Southeast Michigan as a WIRED region.

About the Detroit Regional Chamber

With nearly 23,000 members, the Detroit Regional Chamber is the largest chamber of commerce in the country. The Chamber’s mission is carried out through business attraction efforts, public policy advocacy, strategic partnerships and quality products and services for members.

About WIRED

The Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development initiative is an effort by the U.S. Labor Department’s Employment and Training Administration to integrate economic and workforce development activities and demonstrate that talent development can drive economic transformation in regional economies across the United States.
