Mary Kramer

Publisher, Crain's Detroit Business

Kramer-Mary-cutout-CDB-11Mary Kramer was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. She is a graduate of Grand Valley State University and worked for four daily newspapers before joining Crain’s Detroit Business in April 1989 as editor. She has since been promoted to publisher, responsible for all operations for the publication that was founded in 1985.

Crain’s Detroit Business covers business news – including nonprofits and philanthropy — in the five-county metropolitan Detroit area. A statewide enewsletter, Crain’s Michigan Business, extends that coverage statewide.

Her volunteer roles include many that support higher education: foundation board member at Wayne State and Grand Valley State universities and a director of the Michigan Colleges Foundation. She holds honorary doctorates from Grand Valley State University, Walsh College, Alma College and Central and Eastern Michigan universities and recently earned a Master of Science degree in tntegrated marketing communications from Eastern Michigan University.

She is also a member of the Detroit Regional Chamber, Metropolitan Affairs Coalition and Crimestoppers boards. She is the first woman to be elected president of the historic Detroit Athletic Club.
