Member of the Month: Emagine Entertainment Inc. Offers New Programs to Upskill Regional Talent

May 22, 2019
Editor’s note: The Member of the Month highlights a Detroit Regional Chamber member company working to grow the regional economy through innovative leadership and programs or support of policies that benefit the business community at large.

Emagine Entertainment Inc. was named the Chamber’s member of the month for May 2019 because of their long history as cheerleaders of Michigan. Emagine hires, trains, and retains talent in the state and plays a key role in Detroit’s continued development.

Emagine’s first theater opened in Birch Run in 1997. The company has since expanded to 20 locations across Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota. Their ability to bring jobs to the region was recently recognized when Chief People Officer, Shelby Langenstein, was recognized in Crain’s Detroit Business’s 2019 20 in Their 20s for her efforts to create jobs that attract young talent to the company.

Langenstein is currently working to develop a certification program for theater managers, showing Emagine’s investment in upskilling employees.

“People leave people, not jobs,” Langenstein said. “If I hire people to just scoop popcorn, that’s not fulfilling. I want to provide an experience and make an impression on our people that they can do work they enjoy. That’s what’s going to retain employees.”

In February 2018, Emagine Entertainment Inc. and Big Sean announced their joint venture agreement to develop Sean Anderson Theatre, powered by Emagine, a cinematic and live music entertainment center in Detroit. This announcement is expected to bring even more jobs to those living in Southeast Michigan and highlights the company’s commitment to the region. The new partnership is actively scouting prospective sites with the goal of opening in Detroit in 2020.
