Plunkett Cooney names five attorneys as new shareholders

Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, recently named five attorneys as its newest shareholders.

Chase M. Kubica, Mitchell McIntyre, Christopher J. Scott, Kimberly K. Seibert and Andrea Forsyth Telling were unanimously approved by the firm’s Board of Directors as the firm’s newest shareholders. The promotion from associate attorney is based on the recommendations of the firm’s Shareholder Evaluation Committee and is effective January 1, 2019.

Kubica is a member of the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office who focuses his litigation practice in the areas of motor vehicle liability, no fault law and premises liability. He represents national insurers, corporations and individuals in first- and third-party automobile negligence claims, as well as uninsured and underinsured motorist benefits. Kubica also has experience handling cases that involve alleged fraud and suspicious insured and medical provider claims related to motor vehicle accidents.

Admitted to the State Bar of Michigan and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Kubica has been named as a Michigan Super Lawyers Rising Star since 2013. He is a 2010 cum laude graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and a 2006 graduate of Michigan State University.

McIntyre is a member of the firm’s Transportation Law Practice Group. He has extensive experience with insurance coverage, no-fault and high exposure transportation litigation and also specializes in transportation network claims and ride-sharing. McIntyre represents some of the largest carriers and rental car corporations in the country and acts as Michigan panel counsel for one of the premier network transportation companies.

A member of the firm’s Detroit office, McIntyre graduated, cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School in 2012 where he received both the Silver and Bronze Key Academic Awards. He received his undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University in 2008.

Scott is a member of the firm’s Flint office who focuses his practice in all areas of law concerning personal injury, property damage or commercial liability. He handles matters that include premises liability, construction liability, trespass/tree removal liability, civil rights, medical liability, trusts and estates, probate litigation and litigation involving motor vehicle no-fault and negligence claims.

Scott graduated from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2003. He graduated from the University of Michigan – Flint in 1998.

Seibert serves as co-leader of Plunkett Cooney’s Transportation Law Practice Group. She focuses her practice in the areas of motor vehicle negligence and no-fault law, routinely defending insurers, rental car companies, trucking companies, and corporations in no-fault coverage disputes and negligence suits.

A member of the firm’s Detroit office, Seibert has been named for the past two years as a Michigan Rising Star in Civil Litigation Defense by Michigan Super Lawyers. She received her law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 2011 where she received the Bronze Key Certificate. Seibert received her undergraduate degree from University of Michigan in 2008.

Rounding out the list of Plunkett Cooney’s new shareholders is Andrea Forsyth Telling, who is a member of the firm’s Grand Rapids office. Forsyth Telling focuses her practice in the area of transportation law with particular emphasis on first- and third-party motor vehicle liability claims. Her practice has particular emphasis on the representation of national insurance providers in complex medical fraud litigation, complex attendant care matters and extra-contractual litigation disputes.

Admitted to practice in Illinois, Colorado and Michigan, as well as the federal courts in Illinois and Michigan, Forsyth Telling received her law degree, with high honors, from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2005 and her undergraduate degree from DePaul University in 1998.

Newly-minted Attorneys Join Plunkett Cooney

After they recently passed the Michigan Bar exam, Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, has added the talents of four new attorneys.

Taher K. Ali, Matthew J. High, Celeste C. Kinney and Kelly J. Shefferly have joined the firm as associates. They will handle matters involving insurance coverage, employment law, business law and torts and litigation.

Ali is a member of the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office who practices primarily in the area of insurance law. He represents major property and casualty insurance companies in coverage cases throughout the Midwest. His coverage work includes research and coverage opinions regarding general liability policy issues.

Ali received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School. While there, he worked as a certified student attorney for the Environmental Law Clinic. He also served as a summer intern at the Wisconsin Department of Justice – Office of the Solicitor General in Madison, Wisconsin. Ali received his undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Michigan in 2015.

A member of the firm’s Torts & Litigation and Labor & Employment Law practice groups, High handles matters involving premises liability, employment law and general negligence, including allegations of discrimination, sexual harassment, breach of contract and civil rights claims. An associate in the Bloomfield Hills office, he also assists with municipal law matters, including zoning issues, telecommunications matters, charter revisions and annexations issues on behalf of municipalities.

High recently received his law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. While there, he worked as a student attorney with the State Appellate Defenders Office Criminal Advocacy Clinic. He also served as a summer intern for a Fortune 100 Company. He received his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University in 2015.

A member of the firm’s Detroit office, Kinney will spend approximately the next two years working as a judicial law clerk at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. She will return to Plunkett Cooney in September 2020.

Kinney is a member of the Detroit Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. Admitted to practice in Michigan, she graduated earlier this year, cum laude, from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. While there, she worked as a student attorney with the State Appellate Defenders Office Criminal Advocacy Clinic. Kinney received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2015.

The final associate to join the firm is Kelly J. Shefferly who is a member of the Banking, Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights and Transactional Law practice groups. Shefferly handles contracts and litigation, including collections and breach of contract claims. He also represents business clients in mergers and acquisitions and real estate law.

Shefferly is a former judicial extern for the Hon. Wendy Lynn Potts in the Business Court at the Sixth Circuit Court in Pontiac, Michigan. He also worked as a judicial extern for the Hon. Deborah L. Thorne of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago. A 2018 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, Shefferly received master’s degrees from The George Washington University in 2014 and DePaul University in 2010. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2007.

James M. Crowley joins the firm as a partner in the Banking, Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Practice Group. A 1982 graduate of DePaul University College of Law, Crowley has over 35 years of experience representing financial institutions and other companies in business transactions, bankruptcy proceedings and commercial litigation. His practice also includes a particular focus on the construction industry where he has successfully represented contractors and engineers in a variety of transactional matters and litigation.

A partner in the Banking, Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Practice Group, John F. Sullivan represents financial institutions, developers, title insurers, realtors and other commercial clients in litigation. With more than 20 years of experience, Sullivan maintains a vertically integrated practice offering his clients expertise with respect to regulatory compliance, trial counsel, appellate advocacy and business transactions. Sullivan is a 1981 graduate of DePaul University College of Law.

Jennifer E. Walker is an associate in Plunkett Cooney’s Banking, Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Practice Group who focuses her practice in the areas of residential and commercial mortgage foreclosure litigation and collection disputes. Matthew L. A former real estate broker and title examiner, Lamb has practical business experience having personally developed and owned commercial real estate. Plunkett Cooney Among Top 100 Firms for Female Attorney Diversity

The National Law Journal (NLJ) recently named Plunkett Cooney – one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms – among the best in the nation for female attorney diversity.

The firm’s 79th place rank within the top 100 is based on statistical data obtained as part of the NLJ’s annual survey of the 500 largest law firms in the nation. The National Law Journal is a monthly magazine that exclusively covers issues important to attorneys in public and private practice, judges and other members of the legal community.

“Obviously, we’re pleased to rank this highly in the NLJ survey, but we can do even better,” said Plunkett Cooney President & CEO Thomas P. Vincent “Our focus on diversity over the years has been very successful. It’s particularly gratifying to see so many of our women attorneys now in firm leadership positions.”

According to the report, which was published in the July edition of the NLJ magazine, Plunkett Cooney has a “Women in the Law Score” of 57.7. This statistic is determined by adding the percentage of female attorneys and percentage of female partners. The firm has 33.60% female attorneys with 22.10% female partners and 44.30% female associates.

In addition to its ranking for female diversity, Plunkett Cooney ranked 268 out of the 500 largest firms nationally with 149 attorneys firm wide.
