Principal Lissi Mojica To Speak At FCBA Regional Meeting

Brooks Kushman Principal Lissi Mojica will speak at the Federal Circuit Bar Association’s (FCBA) regional meeting at the Rocky Mountain Regional US Patent and Trademark Office in Denver, Colorado on February 17, 2017. The program will focus on current topics related to patent litigation and the Courts and Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Mojica will speak about Practical Considerations and Lessons Learned for Appeals to the Federal Circuit from PTAB.

Mojica is a globally recognized leader in post-grant proceedings and one of the most experienced practitioners in the field. For nearly two decades Mojica was an examiner with the US Patent Trademark Office (USPTO). In that role she launched and became the first director of the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) to safeguard the quality and consistency of reexamination proceedings and to reduce pendency. Her practice focuses on all aspects of post-grant proceedings, including inter partes review, post-grant review, covered business method proceedings, reexamination proceedings, reissues and interferences. Mojica also specializes in appeals to the USPTO’s PTAB, patent quality and patent examination matters.

Mojica holds a Master in Business Administration from Marymount University as well as a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Brooks Kushman Hires Two Associates

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman is pleased to announce the firm has hired Lauren B. Rennert and Justin Barry as associates, adding to the firm’s trademark, patent prosecution and IP litigation teams.

Rennert’s practice primarily focuses on intellectual property litigation. She works with the firm’s litigation team on a variety of matters regarding patent, trademark, and copyright infringement, as well as trade dress, trade secret, and contract related matters. Rennert also has experience with post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Her practice extends beyond litigation and includes clearance, procurement, maintenance, licensing and enforcement of trademark rights.

Prior to joining Brooks Kushman as an associate, Rennert was a law clerk for the firm’s litigation and trademark practices. She also served as a case evaluator for the American Bar Association Intellectual Property Section on the organization’s Copyright Litigation Sub-Committee and as a student attorney for the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Project.

Barry’s practice focuses on patent prosecution and intellectual property litigation. He works with clients in a variety of industries and technologies, including communication systems, hybrid electric vehicles, and control systems.

Barry previously served as a law clerk for the firm’s patent prosecution and litigation department. He also served as an intellectual property intern with a Michigan-based law firm and as an electrical design engineer with American Electric Power at the company’s Cook Nuclear Plant.

Brooks Kushman Shareholder to Discuss Software Patentability on USPTO Panel

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman Shareholder John LeRoy will serve on a panel during a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) program exploring software patentability at Lawrence Technical University in Southfield, Michigan on May 20, 2015.

LeRoy will join two other panelists and moderator Christal Sheppard, director of the USPTO’s Detroit office to discuss software patentability in light of the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank. The ruling has led to widespread changes in the way that software companies patent their products and ideas.

LeRoy is the chair of Brooks Kushman’s Open Source Compliance practice. His practice focuses on patent litigation in the software, electrical and mechanical arts. With over 15 years of patent litigation experience, he has represented clients in virtually every industry. John has successfully tried patent cases in Federal Courts nationwide and has successfully handled appeals before Federal Circuit.
