BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Jennifer Consiglio has been elected Chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s Business Law Section. She formerly served as Vice Chair and council member of the State Bar of Michigan Business Law Section which, among other things, monitors Michigan’s business laws and advises on their amendment from time to time.

Consiglio practices in Butzel Long’s Business Law Department. She serves as a trusted advisor to both private and public clients in all aspects of formation, governance, contracting, and operations; complex business transactions such as mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, restructurings, private debt and equity financings, and private and public offerings; and securities law compliance.

Butzel Long attorney Rebecca S. Davies featured during State Bar of Michigan Health Care Law Section’s Annual Meeting on September 19, 2019

DETROIT, Mich. – Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Rebecca S. Davies is a featured speaker during the State Bar of Michigan’s Health Care Law Section’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at the Detroit Athletic Club.

The title for her presentation is, “Understanding the Employer’s Obligations under Michigan’s newly enacted Paid Medical Leave Act and the Family Medical Leave Act.”

Davies concentrates her practice primarily in the areas of employment law and commercial litigation. She represents employers in federal and state court litigation and before state and federal administrative agencies.
She has represented both the private and public sectors for nearly 25 years including companies with two to 20,000 employees. In the public sector, she has represented numerous municipalities, libraries, counties and government authorities.

Davies has had repeated success both in and out of the courtroom. In federal court, she has received no cause verdicts in the defense of employment and commercial jury trials. In state court, she has obtained numerous dismissals and favorable settlements in a wide range of employment disputes, including harassment, wrongful termination, employment discrimination and wage claims.

She also has repeatedly obtained dismissals of charges before federal and state administrative agencies. Her greatest successes, however, may be her efforts to prevent litigation. She has regularly counseled employers regarding compliance under federal and state employment laws (including FLSA, FMLA, ADA and Title VII), drafted employment policies, and advised on preventative strategies.

In 2018, Davies was named a 2018 “Best of MichBusiness Awards” recipient. She also facilitates two monthly affinity groups of human resource professionals for MichBusiness. She also was named a “2017 Honoree for Michigan Women in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. In addition, she is a frequent author and lecturer, not only for client in-house trainings and publications, but also outside organizations including Walsh College, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, Automation Alley and the American Society of Employers.

At the same time, Davies is an adjunct faculty member at Walsh College, where she teaches the SHRM-CP/SCP certification courses as well as general business law courses. Davies is active in national and local legal associations and regularly volunteers in her community.
Davies is a regular contributor to the annual supplement for the American Bar Association’s The Fair Labor Standards published by BNA. She also serves on the Board and was the past Chair of the North American Transportation Employee Relations Association (NATERA). Davies earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan at Dearborn and a juris doctorate, magna cum laude, from the Detroit College of Law in 1995. DeLorenzo appointed to State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners

Josephine A. DeLorenzo, a partner at Plunkett Cooney – one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms – has been appointed commissioner-at-large of the State Bar of Michigan (SBM) Board of Commissioners.

A co-leader of the firm’s Appellate Law Practice Group, DeLorenzo was recently appointed to the post by the Michigan Supreme Court. Commissioners serve three-year terms commencing each year upon adjournment of the SBM annual meeting.

The SBM Board of Commissioners provides oversight to the State Bar on finance, public policy, professional standards and member services and communications.

DeLorenzo, who graduated magna cum laude from University of Notre Dame in 1991 and summa cum laude from University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 2008, joined the firm in 2011 and became a partner in 2017.

Brooks Kushman Attorneys Elected State Bar IP Section Officers

Brooks Kushman attorneys David C. Berry and Hope Shovein have been elected to serve one-year terms as Chair and Chair-Elect, respectively, of the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section. The election took place on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the section’s annual meeting at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

As Chair, Berry will be responsible for oversight of the group of over 1200 members, report on the section’s efforts and contributions at each annual State Bar of Michigan meeting and oversee the section’s various events throughout the year. He also chairs the steering committee of the Michigan Patent Pro Bono Project, which is a service project of the section. Berry is a registered patent attorney and has more than 15 years of law practice experience focusing on patent litigation and IP licensing. He has represented clients in all phases of litigation, including pre-trial proceedings, bench and jury trials and appeals, including arguing before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

As Chair-Elect, Shovein will succeed Berry as Chair in July 2017. She will also preside over the section’s meetings and oversee the Intellectual Property committees as needed. Shovein previously served as the section’s Secretary-Treasurer. Shovein focuses her practice on the procurement and enforcement of trademark rights, including proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Dickinson Wright Attorney Hal W. Milton, Jr. to Receive the 2016 Excellence in Intellectual Property Award
