Editorial Submission Guidelines

Print Friendly and PDF

The Detroit Regional Chamber welcomes members to submit news about their company or organization. The Chamber also occasionally accepts unsolicited submissions for its editorial publications. Articles are accepted only from bona fide members of the Detroit Regional Chamber. Because space is limited and publication cannot be guaranteed, it is recommended that members pitch their stories before submitting (for the Detroiter and eDetroiter).

Member News

  • Member news submissions should be news pieces about members, similar to information that would be or is included in press releases. Member news is not intended to be opinion pieces, analysis or advertorials.

Detroiter and eDetroiter

  • Chamber membership does not guarantee placement in the magazine. Nor does buying an ad in the Detroiter. The editorial and advertising operations are independent of each other. All submissions will be judged solely on their merits and value to our readers.
  • The Detroiter is a business resource guide. Our primary focus is educating people who own or operate small businesses, since they make up 80 percent of Chamber membership. Articles should be informative, but jargon-free and easy to read. Ideally, these articles should be something that many readers might consider clipping and saving, or passing on to others to share.
  • The articles should not promote a specific company or its products and services. They should not be written like “advertorials.” Any such material will  not be published.
  • “Tip” boxes or other short sidebar material are strongly encouraged. Example: “Five Ways to [whatever]” or “Ten Steps toward [whatever].” This material draws readers in and makes the information presented more useful and accessible.
  • A high-quality head shot of the person whose byline will appear in the article must be provided. Other photos and illustrations are also welcome, as long as they add to the content.
  • A one-page article in the Detroiter generally runs about 600 words. More space may be available, but the editor would need to know well in advance. All material is subject to editing and, if necessary, cutting to fit the space available.
  • Stories for the eDetroiter should be limited to approximately 150 words.
  • The author is identified as the end of each article and also on the table of contents: Example: Jane Doe is vice president of purchasing at XYZ Co. Inc. in Detroit.
