$15.5M in Detroit, Wayne County COVID-19 Business Relief Grants Available, Apply Starting July 15

July 14, 2020
From July 15 through August 5, the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. (DEGC) will open a new grant application that has $15.5 million available for Wayne County business owners, with $7.25 million to be granted within the City of Detroit borders. The funding is appropriated from the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which provided the state and various local units of government with nearly $3.9 billion.

The $100 million Michigan Strategic Fund announced last week, split up the funding among 14 economic development organizations across the state including Ann Arbor Spark, DEGC, the Flint & Genessee Chamber, and Oakland County.

Businesses can apply at MichiganBusiness.org until August 5, 2020, and the funds are reported to be delivered by the end of September. The grants can be used for payroll, rent, mortgages, utilities, and other such payments. Recipients need to prove COVID-19 has hurt their bottom line and that they have 50 or fewer employees. They also can’t have already received a grant through the Michigan Strategic Fund’s Michigan Small Business Relief Program, according to a state news release.

Past DEGC grants since COVID-19, have awarded approximately 740 small businesses for those grants of between $2,500 and $10,000. That number of awardees amounted to about 44% of the 1,700 applicants.
