Gov. Rick Snyder sees an opportunity for the Michigan Legislature to move this year to include sexual orientation into the state’s anti-discrimination law, his spokeswoman said Thursday.
The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act protects Michigan residents from discrimination based on race, gender, age and other characteristics, but not sexual orientation.
Governor Rick Snyder challenged the Michigan business, government and community leaders at the 2014 Conference to work as collaborative partners in support of the expeditious settlement of Detroit’s bankruptcy. The Governor urged attendees to make a connection between the private and education sectors, as it would give Michigan a strong economic advantage, opportunity to grow and close the skills gap like nowhere else in the nation.

The Michigan Secretary of State is partnering with AAA Michigan to offer some of its online services at local branches.
Computer and printer access to the Secretary of State’s online portal at ExpressSOS.com will be introduced first in AAA Michigan’s centers in downtown Detroit, Livonia and Grand Rapids by early fall and then likely include all AAA Michigan’s 31 sites, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson was to announce today at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference.

LANSING, MI — The 2014 Mackinac Policy Conference continues Thursday at the Grand Hotel, where roughly 1,500 business and political leaders from around Michigan will sit in on sessions and rub elbows on the porch of the Grand Hotel.
Detroit Public Television will broadcast during the event, organized by the Detroit Regional Chamber, and live stream various sessions through noon on Friday.

Mackinac Island — Gov. Rick Snyder is encouraging Michigan lawmakers to consider amending the state’s civil rights law to include protections for gays and lesbians.
The Republican governor weighed in on the issue Thursday morning as the Detroit Regional Chamber and Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce called for lawmakers to make it illegal to discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

MACKINAC ISLAND — Gov. Rick Snyder said Thursday he would like to see lawmakers amend the state’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include language about sexual orientation and gender identity before the end of the year.
“I don’t believe in discrimination,” Snyder said in an interview with Crain’s. “I hope that’s something the Legislature will take up sometime this year.”

Mackinac Island — There, in the middle of the Grand Hotel’s historic lobby, stood Rick Snyder and his wife, as a Republican backer publicly lashed the would-be governor for taking a rhetorical beating at a candidate forum.
It was a striking scene, four years ago this week. Here was Snyder beginning his long-shot play to launch a sweeping agenda to improve the state’s balance sheet, reform taxes, improve competitiveness and embark on an ambitious bankruptcy-led restructuring of Detroit that is recasting the traditional camps of Republican versus Democrat, city versus suburb.
