Dramatic changes in education are needed to prepare students for 21st century jobs, Joel Klein, former chancellor of New York City Department of Education, said Wednesday at the Mackinac Policy Conference.
Klein, the keynote speaker for a panel on “STEM Economy: Innovations in Educating the Next Generation,” said America needs to make teaching the most revered profession, and technology can be used to transform education.

MACKINAC ISLAND — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said Wednesday that the city is making strides in its battle to stabilize neighborhoods and improve basic public services that are critical to attracting and retaining residents in the ever-shrinking city.
“I told you if I got here there would be change,” Duggan told an audience at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s annual policy conference on Mackinac Island, noting that he was campaigning for mayor a year ago — and within days of last year’s conference was kicked off the city’s primary ballot and forced to run a write-in campaign.

MACKINAC ISLAND — Removing politics from education, and focusing more on science, technology, engineering and math will help to prepare students for a better future.
That was the message from Joel Klein, the former chancellor of the New York City Department of Education and the CEO, Education Division, News Corp., who said during his remarks Wednesday at the Mackinac Policy Conference that schools across the country are not preparing students properly.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI – It was only a year ago that Mayor Mike Duggan was at the Mackinac Policy Conference as a regular citizen, and shortly afterward he was unsure of his political career’s future.
But on Wednesday Duggan highlighted a series of accomplishments since he took office after being removed from the mayoral ballot and then successfully running as a write-in candidate to be Detroit’s executive, and he announced new initiatives that he said go along with his administration’s singular focus to repopulate a city that has lost more than half its population since the 1950s.

During the opening talk at the Mackinac Policy Conference Gov. Rick Snyder covered the three pillars that we will be discuss and sharing this week: entrepreneurship, STEM education and making an impact.
What does making an impact mean? Snyder gave credit to a few cities that have worked together to create change including Detroit’s Live Midtown incentives, bringing young professionals downtown to live where they work, and the internationally recognized ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids.

MACKINAC ISLAND — U.S. Senate hopefuls Terri Lynn Land and Gary Peters took turns on stage Wednesday at the Mackinac Policy Conference, their first joint forum since winning their de facto party nominations as the only candidates on the primary ballot.
Peters, a Bloomfield Hills Democrat who has served in Congress since 2009, delved into policy with the pro-business crowd at the Detroit Regional Chamber Political Action Committee reception, where a moderator repeatedly asked him to shorten his answers.

Mackinac Island — Gov. Rick Snyder is trying to keep a fight over control of Detroit’s water department from swamping the city’s bankruptcy “grand bargain.”
The governor on Wednesday implored suburban leaders to stop attaching demands to legislation that would provide millions to shore up city pension funds. County executives L. Brooks Patterson and Mark Hackel want strings tied to the bills to protect suburban interests in the water system, but Snyder said those efforts will only “interfere” with the goal of helping Detroit pensioners.
