360 Detroit Uses NeighborHUB Grant to Impact the Community Through Pandemic

Back in March, George Adams president and founder of 360 Detroit Inc. began distributing PPE kits, along with First Aid supplies and toys for kids, to local residents in the Virginia Park neighborhood, where their NeigborHUB project is located. The NeigborHUB grant program is all about empowering innovative and collaborative solutions to the issues facing the city’s neighborhood and 360 Detroit Inc. did just that when his community needed it the most. Adams spoke with us about how it’s been going and how he met the needs of his neighborhood during this difficult time.

Q: Can you tell us more about how 360 Detroit has shifted to meet the needs of the community during the pandemic?

A: We provided care packages during Michigan’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order. We provided fresh produce boxes to more than 200 residents. We have also recently allowed residents to participate in the painting of a mural. We practiced social distancing and other COVID-19 protocols while creating it.

 

Q: How have you used the Hub park space to help the community and what are ways you plan to continue to do this?

A: Most of the residents who participated in the mural painting thought it was therapeutic, peaceful, and fun. We will continue to have small outdoor programming at the Hub.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Q: One of the many services the community house offers is a space for children desiring to have a place to learn and grow. How are you helping this fall with the transition to online learning for many children in the community?

A: The interior of the house is still under construction. We were delayed due to COVID-19. We are kind of in a wait and see phase for in person programming inside the house once its complete. We will continue to make adjustments as needed to ensure everyone’s safety.

Q: What has been a highlight of being a NeighborHUB grant awardee?

A:The highlight was the opportunity to participate in the Detroit Policy Conference and connect with so many potential supporters.

LIFT Announces Registration Open for Fall Welding and CNC Machining Courses

LIFT, the Detroit-based Department of Defense-supported national manufacturing innovation institute, announced today that it is accepting registrations for its fall welding and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) courses held at the institute’s Corktown facility.

LIFT’s Welding Technician program prepares students to become entry-level welders in either Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG). Utilizing curriculum aligned to the American Welding Society SENSE Level I standards, this course covers the required knowledge, attitude, skills, and habits required to perform routine, predictable, repetitive, and procedural welding tasks. Topics include: Safety, Occupational Orientation, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), four Thermal Cutting Processes, and Welding Inspection and Testing.

LIFT’s CNC Operations program prepares students to operate CNC mills and lathes. Utilizing curriculum aligned to NIMS Machining standards, this course covers: Machine maintenance, safety, print reading, measurements, inspection, cutting tool assembly, geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and hands-on project-based learning done in the Learning Lab.

John James

President, James Group International

John James is president of James Group International. Prior to this role, James served in the U.S. Army as a Ranger qualified aviation officer after graduating from West Point. He served with distinction in Operation Iraqi Freedom where he logged more than 753 combat flight hours, leading two Apache helicopter platoons. He earned a Combat Action Badge and two Air Medals during his service.

After eight years of service to the nation, James was honorably discharged and returned to Michigan to work in the family business, James Group International. Are you ready to return to your workspace?

The physical workplace is where connections are made, innovation is fostered and culture is grown. It’s also where employees have access to the people, tools and resources they need to collaborate and innovate most effectively. But getting people back to the workplace safely in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic will require some significant changes in workspace design, processes and technology. Companies should be thinking about what needs to happen now and in the near and far future to evolve their spaces into safe, functional environments that meet needs for physical safety, employee wellbeing and productivity.

A return-to-space strategy should include several elements.

• Design: Most workspaces will need to be reconfigured to reduce density and prevent the spread of pathogens. Strategies include reducing seating in common areas to promote social distancing, eliminating shared desking, changing the geometry of furniture, installing partitions and screens to create boundaries, and posting signage with safety and physical distancing cues. Overall spaces will need to be flexible and adaptable to support the changing needs of employees and businesses.

• People: Effective communication and clear health and safety protocols will go a long way towards making employees more comfortable returning to the office. Your policies may include daily health screening checks for employees and visitors, installation of sanitation stations, use of masks or other PPE, and communication of personal hygiene expectations. Don’t forget employees still working from home full- or part-time: establish clear protocols and guidelines for at-home work, set up regular check-ins, and make sure at-home workers have the right tools, technology, training and furniture to maximize productivity.

• Technology: Technology can help improve communication, safety and productivity in the post-COVID workplace. In addition to the virtual conferencing and collaboration tools you’re probably already using for remote work, consider leveraging employee-facing apps for health screening and company news, digital signage to communicate evolving safety protocols, and touch-free room reservation systems and other hands-free devices. Occupancy sensors can help companies make data-driven decisions to reduce density and identify under-utilized spaces.

Organizations need to strategize how they can retrofit their workspaces for now, reconfigure for the near-term and reimagine for the future. The role the workplace will serve in the future will be more important than ever.
