Butzel Long elects shareholders

DETROIT, Mich. – Butzel Long attorneys Ziyad I. Hermiz and Paul M. Mersino have been elected shareholders. Previously, they were associates with the firm.

Ziyad I. Hermiz

Based in Butzel Long’s Detroit office, Hermiz concentrates his practice in the area of business litigation and was named a Michigan Super Lawyers Rising Star (Business Litigation) 2012-2014. Prior to joining Butzel Long, Hermiz interned for the Honorable Judge Avern Cohn for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (2007-2008).

Hermiz served as the Vice President of the Chaldean American Bar Association from 2011-2013. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the American Bar Association. He is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He is a graduate of Leadership Oakland (Class XXIV).

He has served and currently serves as a member of the firm’s Future Leaders Club and 2015 Detroit Business Symposium Steering Committee. He also assists the Recruiting Committee. He has served as the firm’s coordinator for the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association’s Access to Justice Program’s legal clinic, providing pro bono legal services.

Hermiz is a graduate of The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (J.D., cum laude, 2008), where he was the Executive Editor of the University of Detroit Mercy Law Review and received the Dean’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence. He also was inducted into the Justice Frank Murphy Honor Society, honoring graduates with outstanding academic achievement. He completed his undergraduate business studies at Michigan State University (B.A., with honors, 2004) where he was the recipient of the Phillip and Viola May Scholarship.

Paul M. Mersino

Based in Butzel Long’s Detroit office, Mersino is a member of Butzel Long’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group. He concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation, contract disputes, construction litigation, automotive supplier disputes, non-competition and trade secret disputes, and landlord-tenant disputes. He also represents and advises several startup companies, assisting them with their legal needs and matching them with potential venture capital funding and serves as a mentor to startup business incubators and accelerators in the region.

Mersino also handles appeals in the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court, and federal courts. He has been recognized as a Michigan Super Lawyers Rising Star in Business Litigation for 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Mersino is very active in the community. He currently is the Vice President of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, Barrister’s Section and serves as an advisor to the Institute of Continuing Legal Education’s Litigation Advisory Board. He is a member of the current class of Leadership Oakland and recently graduated from the Detroit Chapter of the American Inns of Court. He also is a member of the Detroit Historical Society.

Mersino is a 2008 graduate of Ave Maria School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a member of Law Review and the State Championship Moot Court team. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Northwood University (B.A., 2005).
