Chamber Government Relations Team Connects Members to Incoming Michigan House Leaders to Discuss Post-Election Legislative Priorities

The Detroit Regional Chamber Government Relations team convened members of its Advocacy Advisory Council – which comprises Elite Chamber members – with incoming Michigan House Minority Leader, Rep. Donna Lasinski, and Michigan House Speaker-Elect, Rep. Jason Wentworth.

This exclusive conversation led by the Chamber’s Vice President of Government Relations, Brad Williams, offered critical conversation about election outcomes and what lies ahead for Michigan through lame duck and into the new legislative session in 2021.

COVID-19 Pandemic
Getting the COVID-19 pandemic in Michigan under control is of the utmost importance. Ensuring the health and safety of communities and codifying regulations to keep cases, hospitalizations, and deaths down are essential to moving the state into an economic recovery.

Infrastructure and Water
Pothole season is approaching, and the state’s significant infrastructure issues haven’t gone away because of the pandemic. Not only will finding solutions to improve Michigan’s roads, bridges, dams, and other critical infrastructure be priorities into the next legislative session, but so will the preservation and improvement of the state’s critical water resources and systems.

Internet Access
Lack of viable internet connections in the state’s rural regions is a pervasive issue that has only been amplified through the COVID-19 crisis and shifts to working and learning from home. Reducing the disparities created by this lack of connectivity is a crucial measure to supporting Michiganders educationally and economically, and a key pillar of the next legislative session.

Equitable Education and Talent Pipeline
An ongoing priority for the Michigan Legislature is addressing the education and talent disparities plaguing the state. While these have posed enduring challenges in Michigan, the COVID-19 pandemic put a microscope to them.
