COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) 2023 Benefit Changes

May 9, 2023

During the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE), extra benefits were provided for food assistance and Medicaid, including a temporary stop of the Medicaid renewal process. Many changes were made to the Medicaid program’s eligibility, administration, and policies to ease rules for providers and prevent Medicaid beneficiaries from losing health insurance.

Beginning Thursday, May 11, the PHE will be lifted, and the Department of Health and Human Services will begin reviewing Medicaid eligibility once again. Individuals who have Medicaid, MIChild, or Healthy Michigan Plan may need to go through the renewal process to find out if they are still eligible for free or low-cost Medicaid coverage.

What to Do Now if You Have Medicaid Coverage

  1. Update your address, phone number, and email address.
  2. Report any changes to your household or income.
  3. Check your mail. You may need to fill out a renewal form.
