Life Remodeled has been working with partners to address the business community needs and have shifted resources within their company to react to the apparent needs during the pandemic. Below we highlight the innovative and strategic approaches they have taken throughout this time.

Q: How has Life Remodeled adapted to the coronavirus outbreak?
A: We partnered with Gleaners Community Food Bank and Eastern Market to hold food distributions at our Durfee Innovation Society (DIS) for local individuals and families and local community organizing groups., respectively. Every week we distribute 700 boxes of fresh, locally grown produce with Eastern Market, and we distribute groceries for 300 families with Gleaners bi-weekly.

Q: How are you supporting the community in the long-term recovery process following the aftermath of COVID-19?
A: We have also been providing gift card giveaways to local, black-owned restaurants. So far, we have given away $31,000 in gift cards to community members to support these small businesses. We also distributed over 2,500 washable, reusable masks to our community, thanks to our partnership with G1 Impact, the Detroit Tigers Foundation, Miguel and Rosangel Cabrera, the Serve Foundation, and our Community Advisory Council.

Q: Is there a unique pivot that your company has taken to tackle other challenges presented darning this time?
A: Additionally, through generous donations we received, we were able to provide rent assistance to 10 families (with a total of 41 children) in our community and two2 months of rent deferment for a number of our DIS tenants.

Q: What is one thing you would like to business and your community to know about?
A: We believe the Durfee Innovation SocietyDIS is uniquely positioned to create sustainable, equitable change in our community. Our 36 nonprofit and for-profit tenants work together to provide educational opportunity, jobs, and critical human services. To make our efforts even more efficient, we are taking steps to provide support and sustainability to the organizations within our building in addition to adding value beyond just leasing space through a shared services model.
