Michigan Among Three States Pushing for COVID-19-Related Tax Relief for Businesses

September 24, 2020
The Detroit Regional Chamber government relations team has been advocating for a package of bills that would offer businesses tax relief on PPE purchases as support for the unexpected expenses imposed by the COVID-19 crisis. The Chamber’s Matt Patton testified in favor of the legislation to the Michigan House Tax Committee earlier this month, and most recently was quoted in Bloomberg on the matter:

“If we can agree on the science that PPE is a lifeline for businesses to stay open, then the way to do that is to make PPE more affordable,” said Matt Patton, director of government relations at the Detroit Regional Chamber. “Currently in Michigan, if you are a business that does anything other than manufacturing products for retail, you are paying taxes on your PPE during this pandemic.”

Michigan is among Massachusetts and New York where similar relief is being pursued to support businesses. Discussions on Michigan’s proposed bill package are still underway. Learn more about it in this at-a-glance guide.
