Dan Akerson

Dan_AkersonDaniel F. Akerson, chairman and CEO of General Motors Company, has held that role since 2010, a year in which he led the company’s initial public offering — the largest in U.S. history. He joined GM in 2009 as a member of its Board of Directors.

Under Akerson’s leadership, GM is experiencing a substantial transformation to re-establish the company as an industry leader in dramatic automotive design, technology, business results and corporate financial performance. His team is taking critical steps to drive consistent profitability, gain global market share, improve product quality and customer care, and invest in technology, manufacturing and job creation.

Prior to joining GM, Akerson served as the managing director and head of global buyout for The Carlyle Group in Washington, D.C., where he managed more than $50 billion in assets and more than 200 portfolio companies with several hundred thousand employees around the world. Akerson also served as CEO or president of several telecommunications and technology companies, including MCI, Nextel Communications, XO Communications and General Instrument.

Akerson has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, as well as a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics.
