DCAN/DPN Update – July 2019 Update

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, July 10 which will be the opening of the Detroit College Access Network (DCAN) and Detroit Parent Network’s (DPN) Postsecondary Academic and Career Endeavors (PACE) Detroit Center. We are excited that our work to create a College-Career Drop-In HUB for youth and adults is coming to fruition!

This space, funded by the NeighborHUB grant, is a collaborative initiative between DCAN and DPN to provide support for Metro Detroit families with their journeys beyond high school. The PACE Center is the outgrowth of the larger Community Pathways to Opportunity pilot that seeks to build more pathways for parents and youth in metro Detroit neighborhoods to successfully access education and careers and advance the upward mobility of families.

This quarter, DCAN and DPN, along with Detroit Regional Chamber staff, have been meeting with college and workforce partners to inform our work. We’ve also been upgrading the space at DPN where the PACE Center will offer individual counseling and workshops for individuals and family members.  A couple of the highlights of this period:

Connecting with National College-Career Advocacy Organizations

We had an enlightening site-visit and meeting with the Success Center in Grand Rapids, MI.  We were treated to an overview of the center located in the Main Branch of the Grand Rapids Library by college personnel and parents.  We also joined conference calls with the center in St. Antonio. We found many similarities in our respective missions of creating more accessible pathways for youth to successfully enroll in community and four-year colleges. We committed to meet again and share our Detroit journey, both with Grand Rapids college-career advocates and others across the nation.

Recruitment and Outreach to Community Parents as Opportunity Navigators (DPN Community Pathways to Opportunity Pilot)

DPN has developed an Opportunity Navigator training and Resource Binder that Opportunity Navigators have used as part of the pilot.  Beta presentations were done as part of our Parent/College Cafes at the Heilman and Northwest Activities Center.  With a focus on youth postsecondary enrollment and adults retuning to college and careers, DCAN and Detroit Regional Chamber staff were integral to the initial Opportunity Navigator training. Over the summer months, new Opportunity Navigators will be hired and receive training and orientations by college and career partners. Through a recent mini-grant by Citizens Bank, DPN will be able to hire 1-2 part-time Opportunity Navigators to help at the PACE Center and conduct 3-4 Parent/College Cafes monthly.

Staff Changes

  • At DPN Habiba Adams is transitioning from her role as Community Pathways to Opportunity coordinator to serve as the Chief Storyteller for the City of Detroit! In her place we are happy to welcome Donna who has years of experience in career and college programming.
  • DCAN through funding support by the Kresge Foundation is providing staff and vigorous counseling for participants in the PACE center.
  • Together, Team DCAN and DPN will offer information, counseling, and support in a multi-generational setting!

We will announce soon a special day for the wider community of partners to come celebrate youth and adults that have been accepted into college or training programs. Stay tuned as DPN and DCAN help move Detroit forward by empowering youth and families together in their college and career journeys.
