The Detroit Regional Chamber Political Action Committee has backed seven candidates, including three incumbents, for Detroit City Council in the Aug. 6 primary election.

Councilmember James Tate (District 1), council President Saunteel Jenkins (at-large) and President Pro-tem Andre Spivey (District 4) received the PAC’s support, the chamber announced Friday.

Council hopefuls Rick Bowers (District 2), Scott Benson (District 3), Adam Hollier (District 5) and Vince Keenan (District 6) also received endorsements.

The Detroit city charter, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2012, requires the council to consist of two members elected at-large and seven elected in districts. The top two vote-getters in each district in the primary election will advance to the Nov. 5 general election. The top four at-large vote-getters also advance to the general election.

The chamber’s 26-member PAC board voted on the endorsements Monday, said Brad Williams, the chamber’s vice president of government relations. The board had a “wide consensus” on the endorsements, Williams said.

“It’s probably safe to assume that if these particular candidates get through to the general (election), they will get the endorsement, but that will have to be another official act of the (PAC) board,” he said.

The PAC didn’t endorse in District 7 and for the other at-large seat because there wasn’t a “broad consensus on who the best candidate was” in those two contests, Williams said.

The chamber might endorse candidates in the District 7 contest and for the other at-large seat after the primary election, Williams said.

There are 54 city council candidates on the primary election ballot. City council members serve four-year terms.

The chamber last week also announced that write-in mayoral candidate Mike Duggan, the former Detroit Medical Center president and CEO, received the PAC board’s endorsement.
