Employers for Transit

The Detroit region offers companies of all sizes and all industries one of the best business climates in the nation.

The region is home to 10 of Michigan’s 17 Fortune 500 companies which generated a combined revenue of over $223 billion in 2020. The Detroit region also offers low cost of living compared to other peer regions. In addition, Michigan ranks 12th among states for overall tax climate.

“Safely and efficiently moving people and goods is a critical component to a healthy economy. The Detroit region is thriving and growing, however, my any measure, Southeast Michigan lags the rest of the nation in the development and use of public transit. Amazon noted the state of public transit as a key reason why Detroit was not chosen as a finalist for the Amazon’s HQ2 – as have other potential employers.

Voters deserve an opportunity to determine the future of the region. As members of the Employers for Transit Coalition, we call on our elected leaders and the Regional Transit Authority Board of Directors to place a transit plan on the ballot this November that will finally expand mobility options throughout Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties. We consider moving forward on regional transit a critical element of this region’s economic prosperity.”

Please note that this statement does not endorse any one specific transit plan, although the plan led by Wayne County Executive Warren Evans is the only viable plan at this time.

The Chamber hopes you will once again join many other business leaders in supporting a solution to our regional transit challenge.
