TROY, Mich., Feb. 1, 2019—David Trott, Former U.S. Representative for Michigan’s Eleventh Congressional District, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws and delivered the keynote address to 345 graduates, their families and friends at Walsh’s 112th commencement ceremony on Jan. 26 at Zion Christian Church in Troy, Michigan.

Trott shared his top ten lessons from 30 years in business and politics, including, “be confident but humble”, “confront your deficiencies” and “call your mother every Sunday.” He also spoke about the importance of compromise and forbearance. “Reagan was the standard in compromise,” said Trott. “He had very little in common with Speaker O’Neil, but every week they met for lunch, and through a series of compromises, got a lot done for our country.”

Distinguished Alumni Alan C. Young (Walsh ’85) also addressed the audience. Young holds a Master of Taxation from Walsh and is the founder, managing director and CEO of Alan C. Young & Associates, one of the top 25 largest CPA firms in metro Detroit according to Crain’s Detroit Business, and one of the largest minority-owned firms in Michigan. Young received the Distinguished Alumni Award in October 2018 at Walsh’s annual Leadership Awards Dinner.

Student speaker Elizabeth Bond DePaoli, Master of Science in Finance graduate, also shared her Walsh story with the audience.

Walsh’s 112th Commencement class included 345 graduates, ages 19 to 68, from eight countries. Several graduates were U.S. veterans, and five individuals were recognized for achieving a cumulative 4.0 grade point average. They join a network of nearly 29,000 alumni, 85 percent of whom live and work in Michigan.
