Fred Durhal Jr.

State Representative, Michigan House of Representatives

fred durhalFred Durhal Jr. was born in Rochester, New York in 1951 and moved to Detroit with his family when he was six months old. He is the oldest of 12 children born to Fred and Doris Jean (Whaley) Durhal.

Durhal has a distinguished political career as well, having previously served as political organizing director for the Michigan Democratic Party – the first African-American to serve in that capacity. Durhal was also an executive and administrative vice chairman of the 13th Congressional District Democratic Party Organization for more than 20 years and has served as a consultant and trainer for the Democratic National Committee. In addition, Durhal is an elected Precinct Delegate of Precinct 419 in Detroit.

State Representative Durhal is serving his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives serving the residents of Detroit’s 5th District and formerly served as representative of the 9th and 6th Districts. Representative Durhal is assigned to the powerful house appropriations committee and served on the following appropriate sub-committees: Fiscal Oversight, Audit and Litigation (Democratic Vice Chair); General Government (Democratic Vice Chair); Corrections. Durhal’s current sub-committee assignments are yet to be announced.
