Gretchen Whitmer

Former Senator, State of Michigan

Gretchen Whitmer is a former Michigan state senator. As the Democratic Leader in the Senate, Whitmer negotiated with Gov. Snyder and Republicans in the Legislature to expand Medicaid and cover 680,000 more Michiganders through Healthy Michigan.

During her time in the Senate, Whitmer served on the Agriculture, Government Operations, Health Policy, Judiciary, and Legislative Council committees and on the Senate Fiscal Agency Board of Governors. Prior to her election to the Senate, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Whitmer earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Michigan State University (MSU) and a doctorate of jurisprudence from Detroit College of Law at MSU.
