Dan Piepszowski Announces Departure From Leadership Detroit

After 14 years with the Detroit Regional Chamber, serving as the senior director of community leadership development, Dan Piepszowski announced his departure from this role, which includes leading the Chamber’s Leadership Detroit program, effective June 30, 2022. Piepszowski’s oversight of Leadership Detroit has strengthened the Detroit region’s depth in business and community leadership, graduating 13 classes and more than 900 individual leaders.

“Dan truly changed the reputation and profile of Leadership Detroit,” said Sandy K. Baruah, president and chief executive officer for the Detroit Regional Chamber. “Today, the program is recognized as the place where leaders are called upon to be authentic, transparent, and real.”

Piepszowski’s influence on Leadership Detroit can be seen in the strategic formation of each class. He led a thoughtful and competitive class selection process, timely curriculum updates, and strategic speaker identification. Under Piepszowski’s direction, the Leadership Detroit curriculum increased its relevancy by highlighting the region’s progress on a range of issues and forcing participants to wrestle with the historical and contemporary economic, social, and racial disparities Detroiters face.

Piepszowski’s greatest impact on Leadership Detroit is its increased focus and commitment to every measure of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, Leadership Detroit and its alumni base are the most diverse gathering of leaders in the state today. The Chamber will ensure Piepszowski’s impact on the program remains strong for years to come.

“Equity is the centerpiece of Leadership Detroit,” said Piepszowski. “The program continuously improves and sets the stage for regional leaders to grapple with issues they were unaware of and, for many, made them uncomfortable.”

To recognize Piepszowski’s leadership and service, the Chamber will host an event on Tuesday, June 28, to celebrate his accomplishments as Leadership Detroit’s leader. The event is free to attend, and donations to the scholarship fund are being accepted in Dan’s honor.

A Message From Dan

Dear Leadership Detroit Stakeholder:

Dissatisfaction with the status quo, and a vision of what could be, was my send-off to each of the 13 Leadership Detroit classes I had the privilege to lead. Leading the program and inviting over 900 leaders to be passionate and courageous about stepping forward to overcome resistance, work together on solutions, and drive change has been gratifying.

My Leadership Detroit journey taught me to be a better observer of behavior. My experience showed me that what separates leaders is their willingness to self-examine their actions and to reach out for support before making bold decisions and acclimations. Leadership Detroit is a catalyst for this ethos.

Working with countless leaders committed to being and doing better has been an honor. As I chart the next course of my journey, I look forward to taking what I learned from so many of you about leadership and change and blending it with my passion for education and social justice.

Kind Regards,
