Member of the Month: Detroit Athletic Club’s Annual Detroit Cycling Championship Encourages Community Wellness

July 25, 2019
Editor’s note: The Detroit Regional Chamber’s Member of the Month designation recognizes a Chamber member working to grow the regional economy through innovative leadership in alignment with the Chamber’s programs or policy agenda.

The Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) was named the Chamber’s Member of the Month for July because of its continued devotion to improving Detroit’s communal well-being by hosting the third annual Detroit Cycling Championship.

The annual Detroit Cycling Championship welcomes cyclists from around the world and offers family-friendly activities. It consists of 12 races, including Category I-V men’s and women’s races, a kids’ race, corporate race, spinning competition and HandleBar Detroit pedal-push competition.

By hosting this event, the DAC Foundation encourages fitness in the community. Community members can join a free cornhole tournament, buy food at the food truck alley, participate in spin and yoga classes, and watch outdoor entertainment in Beacon Park, where the race starts.

This Championship gives back to the community by ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to practice fitness in their daily lives. Since the Detroit Cycling Championship’s inception, the DAC Foundation, thanks to the help of generous member contributions and sponsors, has funded bikes and helmets for more than 300 Detroit children and families in the Fit Kids 360 Detroit program.

The DAC has a long history of involvement with amateur cycling, with some of the original DAC members being champion cyclists at the turn of the century. With support from organizations like the DAC, Southeast Michigan is moving toward becoming a healthier community for all who live here.
