Mike Shirkey

Senate Majority Leader (R-16)

Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey serves the 16th District, covering Branch, Hillsdale, and Jackson counties. Sen. Shirkey’s Republican colleagues elected Mike to serve as senate majority leader for his second term, beginning January 2019.

Shirkey has served as chair of the Senate Health Policy and Michigan Competitiveness committees, and he currently chairs the Government Operations Committee. Prior to joining the Senate, Shirkey served four years in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 65th District.

Shirkey is the founder and owner of Orbitform, an engineering company that manufactures forming, fastening, joining, and assembly equipment for a wide range of industries and applications. Shirkey also worked for General Motors Co. in various management and engineering roles for 13 years. Mike served on the Columbia Central School Board in the 1980s and 1990s. Shirkey is the past board chair of Allegiance Health System.

Shirkey earned a bachelor’s degree from General Motors Institute (GMI) and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Shirkey and his wife, Sue, have three children and several grandchildren.
