The Detroit Regional Chamber has announced new dates for the 2021 Mackinac Policy Conference, Monday, Sept. 20 to Thursday, Sept. 23. The Chamber made this decision in anticipation of Michigan’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the viability of bringing more than 1,500 business, government, and civic leaders to Mackinac Island for the 2021 event. See answers to frequently asked questions below.


1. When will the 2021 Conference occur?

Monday, Sept. 20 to Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021.


2. Why did the dates for the Conference change?

The Chamber made this decision in anticipation of Michigan’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the viability of bringing more than 1,500 business, government, and civic leaders to Mackinac Island for the 2021 event. The dates were selected following discussions with the 2021 Conference Chair Wright L. Lassiter III, president and CEO of Henry Ford Health System, as well as the Chamber’s Executive Committee of its Board of Directors, Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other Conference partners.


3. When will registration open for the 2021 Conference and what is the registration fee?

Registration will open in December 2020. At that time, the registration fee will be $2,200 for Chamber members and $3,100 for nonmembers of the Chamber.


4. I previously transferred my 2020 registration to 2021, what happens now?

Your registration is automatically transferred to the September 2021 dates. If you need to cancel or transfer your registration to another individual, please contact Marianne Bogard at mbogard@detroitchamber.com.


5. What is the deadline to cancel my registration?

The deadline to cancel your registration and receive a refund (less the 10% cancellation fee) is Aug. 20, 2021. To cancel your registration, contact Marianne Bogard at mbogard@detroitchamber.com.


6. I previously transferred my 2020 hotel accommodations to the 2021 Conference May dates. How does this change impact my accommodations?

Grand Hotel and the hoteliers on Mackinac Island are aware of the date change.

If your accommodations were with Grand Hotel, they have automatically been transferred to the September 2021 dates. The Grand Hotel will send you a modified confirmation with the September dates and rates. The confirmation will note the cancellation policy. If you would like to cancel your Grand Hotel room reservation, please call Grand Hotel at 800-334-7263. Cancellation is subject to $50 hotel processing fee.

If your accommodations were with another island hotel, please contact the hotel to confirm your accommodations can be transferred to the September 2021 dates. Cancellation is subject to the hotel’s policy.

7. How does the date change impact the traditional Conference schedule?

Attendees should plan to arrive on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021.
The Conference will conclude on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021.
The schedule of key events will be made available in January 2021.


8. Will programs like “MICHauto on the Island” and “Future Leaders” still occur?

The Chamber’s intent is to retain the entire attendee experience and will proceed in programming for these groups.

MICHauto on the Island sessions and the Future Leaders events will also begin on Monday, Sept. 20. Details on the activities for each group will become available in 2021.


9. My company is interested in securing its sponsorship, who do I contact?

10. Will government officials participate in the Conference?

The Chamber has shared the new dates with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan’s Congressional delegation, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, the county executives from the Detroit region, and members of the state Senate and House of Representatives.

The Chamber is optimistic that elected officials at all levels of government find value in attending the Conference and will make participation a priority.


11. Are the other island businesses aware of the 2021 date change?

The Chamber is working with all hospitality businesses including restaurants, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, and others to ensure they are aware and prepared for the change. If you typically schedule an independent event at a restaurant or venue, please contact the venue to reschedule your reservation.


12. When will the 2022 Conference occur?

The 2022 Mackinac Policy Conference dates are Tuesday, May 31 through Friday, June 3.
