Need a Mask? Check Out These 5 Detroit Area Mask Makers

The Detroit Regional Chamber recently launched the Keep Business Open #MaskUpMichigan campaign. As COVID-19 cases across the state continue to spike, The Chamber’s goal is to reinforce the importance of the wearing of face coverings in public to ensure the state’s businesses are able to continue reopening. To support this effort, here are five Detroit area mask makers that are looking out for their communities and giving back. In return, it is important to support these local businesses, and what better way than by staying safe and purchasing their masks.

Here are a few recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to remember when wearing a mask:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with the mask.
  • Make sure the mask is snug. You don’t want gaps on the sides.
  • Keep the mask on, and don’t touch the front of the mask without gloves.
  • Be sure to wash a cloth mask or dispose of a disposable mask after every use.
  • Wash your hands after you remove your mask.

Detroit Sewn

DIOP

The Detroit-based fashion brand has shifted to making African dashiki masks to help Detroiters during this time. Offering 17 different pattern variations, there is a design that anyone would love. DIOP is also donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of DIOP masks to Feed the Frontlines in Detroit which supports Detroit restaurants and provides meals to emergency and health care workers. The amount donated will be based on how many masks you purchase. They have already raised $70,100 that will directly help the local community.

Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA)

The DIA has made reusable masks, which include artwork from some of the museum’s most iconic pieces. Perfect for the creative-at-heart, the masks are so popular that they have sold out, though a restock is planned for July 15. Set your reminder because these great masks are selling fast.

In response to the rising demand for high-quality masks, the DIA has joined forces with a textile collaborative in the Midwest to create well-designed, comfortable, art-inspired masks.

Master Drapery Services

The Troy-based company has been creating and providing window coverings since 1961 and quickly switched to the mask-making business when the pandemic affected our country. These masks are antimicrobial and made of organic cotton.

When Covid-19 affected their community, they focused on ways to help the community. They now have shifted to full-time production of critical PPE equipment. For each mask purchased, Commerce Township-based Inkpressions will donate a mask to the MI Behavioral Collaborative. Each mask is high-quality 100% cotton with dual-filter technology.
