Plunkett Cooney shifts auto practice into high gear with addition of Cahalan

The motor vehicle liability practice at Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, is picking up speed with the recent addition of attorney John C. Cahalan.

A member of the firm’s Detroit office, Cahalan is a former in-house attorney for the Farmers Insurance Exchange. His practice includes expertise in the areas of motor vehicle liability, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance, medical fraud investigations, attendant care disputes and extra-contractual litigation. He also has experience in the areas of personal injury, premises liability and injuries arising from the ownership of pets.

“John’s experience as an in-house insurance attorney is a real plus for our practice, “ said Dennis G. Cowan, Plunkett Cooney’s President & CEO. “Auto claims have become very specialized, especially given the state’s unique no fault law and other complex issues. We are pleased to have John join our growing defense team.”

A 2012 graduate of University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Cahalan has obtained numerous case dismissals through his aggressive motion practice. He has served as lead trial counsel in several no fault law, personal injury and uninsured/under-insured motorist cases, and he has successfully defended and obtained reimbursements on behalf of his clients in numerous Michigan Assigned Claims Plan cases.

Cahalan, who received his undergraduate degree in 2008 from Marquette University, is a member of the Association of Defense Trial Counsel, the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Incorporated Society of Irish American Lawyers.

Plunkett Cooney’s motor vehicle liability practice extends throughout the states of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, and it includes the resolution of cross-border claims stemming from disputes in Canada. The firm’s attorneys serve as panel counsel to some of the largest insurance providers in the world, including in the areas of motor vehicle liability, fraudulent claims, no fault law and trucking liability.

Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney employs over 140 attorneys in nine Michigan cities, Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm, which provides a range of transactional and litigation services, has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell, a leading, international directory of law firms. Fortune magazine has also named Plunkett Cooney among the top commercial firms in the United States.
