Ilitch Impact Continues With New Red Wings Arena Breaking Ground

The new $650 million Detroit Red Wings arena and entertainment district in downtown Detroit broke ground last week in another positive sign of developers and businesses investing in the city’s resurgence.

The district encompasses a 45-block area connecting existing and new development efforts in downtown and Midtown along Woodward Avenue and paves the way for job creation across the region. The Chamber applauds the Ilitch family on moving the project forward and for their long-time support for the city’s revitalization. Construction on the project is expected to be complete by summer 2017.

Chamber PAC to Host Fundraiser for U.S. Senate Candidate Gary Peters

The Chamber’s Political Action Committee will host a fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Gary Peters on Friday, Oct. 17 at the Detroit Regional Chamber.

Congressman Peters has supported many top Chamber policy priorities including immigration reform, increased infrastructure investment and funding for the customs plaza for the New International Trade Crossing. The Congressman has been a strong bipartisan advocate for metro Detroit and Michigan and is the right choice to represent our state in the Senate.

Candidate Spotlight: Debbie Dingell (12th Congressional District)

The Detroit Regional Chamber’s PAC is proud to endorse former Chamber board member Debbie Dingell, candidate for Michigan’s 12th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, for her strong commitment to invigorating Michigan’s economy.

Dingell’s influence in Washington will be crucial to the success of numerous Chamber priorities, including the construction of the New International Trade Crossing and support for a comprehensive immigration policy that will allow Michigan to expand its most valuable resource: highly skilled labor.

Throughout her professional career, Dingell has gained an invaluable depth of knowledge in the policy arena, ranging from manufacturing to education. While her husband Rep. John Dingell’s presence in Washington will be missed, Debbie Dingell will continue to provide a respected bipartisan voice to the residents of the 12th District and the business community in the entire region. Chamber Vice President of Government Relations Brad Williams spoke with Dingell at the 2014 Mackinac Policy Conference about her husband’s legacy in Congress as well as the upcoming 2014 election.

The Atlantic Champions Detroit’s Small Business Growth

A new monthly series published in The Atlantic focuses on how to improve cities around the world and calls on major metropolitan areas to develop consistent growth strategies for small business clusters.

Citing cities like Detroit and Los Angeles as positive examples where small businesses are booming, the article emphasizes the role cluster-based small business development can play in local and regional economic development.

The article uses data collected by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC), which shows that small businesses clusters have expanded their impact and footprint in 10 urban markets across the country up to three times faster than their respective metro area economies between 2003 and 2011. Chamber CEO Promotes Region’s Growth at ‘Power Luncheon,’ Oct. 7

Detroit Regional Chamber President Sandy Baruah will be the keynote speaker at the Greater Brighton Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural “Power Luncheon” series on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Baruah will discuss the business climate in Michigan and the region as the city of Detroit moves beyond bankruptcy. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Oak Pointe Country Club in Brighton.

The informational luncheon series is held on the first Tuesday of the month and is designed to provide updates on economic and political issues trending locally and statewide. It will also feature leadership insights from heads of business and industry.
