Special Edition: Chamber Supports Gov.’s Appointment of Emergency Manager, Call for Collaboration

Chamber Supports Gov. Snyder’s Appointment of Detroit’s Emergency Manager, Call for Collaboration The Detroit Regional Chamber applauds Governor Rick Snyder’s appointment of Kevyn Orr as Detroit’s emergency financial manager as the next step in Detroit’s continued recovery.

“The appointment of an emergency manager is welcomed. I applaud the Governor for his thoroughness and pragmatism in making this tough decision and echo his call for collaboration and ‘all hands on deck’ in the transformation of this great American city,” said Chamber President and CEO Sandy K. Baruah.

Orr is a prominent and respected attorney out of Washington, D.C. and a University of Michigan graduate. He was also part of the bankruptcy restructuring team at Chrysler in 2009.

“Despite improved efforts recently, municipal change toward solvency was not moving at the rate of speed citizens and businesses deserve and the global economy demands. The final barrier to Detroit’s ongoing renaissance is financial stability and local government stability – Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr will be in a position to make quick and difficult decisions that have eluded city government,” Baruah said.

The Chamber is pleased with Orr’s candid demeanor and his obvious affection for the city. Baruah will be meeting with Orr next week to offer the Chamber’s full support and cooperation moving forward. The Chamber also continues to support Mayor Dave Bing, who continues to demonstrate his trademark grace and professionalism. The Mayor’s partnership with Orr and the Governor is a role model for others to follow and will help speed the resolution of the city’s pressing challenges.
