Statement from Detroit Regional Chamber CEO on Announcement by U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood on Transit Funding

DETROIT, January 18, 2013: Today, Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy K. Baruah issued the following statement on U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s announcement regarding transit options in downtown Detroit and the surrounding region.

“As far as victories for the Detroit region go this is as big as it gets. In economic development terms, constructing a cohesive regional transit system would be like winning the Super Bowl ten times over. It’s a game-changer. Large metropolitan areas simply cannot compete without efficient, seamless transportation infrastructure. While light rail is just one piece of the puzzle, this project is a major step toward a larger 21st century regional transportation infrastructure Southeast Michigan has lacked for far too long.”
