Bodman PLC Attorney David M. Hempstead inducted in Wayne Law Alumni Wall of Fame

Bodman PLC is pleased to announce that David M. Hempstead, Member at the Detroit office was inducted into the Wayne State University Law School Alumni Wall of Fame.

The Wayne Law Alumni Wall of Fame Award is the highest honor awarded by the Law School and is given to either alumni who have distinguished themselves by contributions made in their particular field of work or in the betterment of humanity, or to former faculty and staff who have had a significant impact on the Law School.

“No one is more deserving of a spot on Wayne Law’s Wall of Fame than Dave Hempstead,” said Larry R. Shulman, Bodman’s incoming chairman and a long-time colleague and friend of Hempstead. “Dave has been a consummate leader at Bodman and a consummate alumnus of Wayne Law for decades. We are thankful for the close relationship Bodman has with Wayne Law and the central role that Dave played in fostering that relationship.”

In addition to his role as leader of Bodman’s very successful High Net Worth Practice Group and as the firm’s Vice Chairman for many years, Dave has served and continues to serve on many Board of Directors for the non-profit community, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, Henry Ford Health System, Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan and the Wayne State University Board of Visitors. Hempstead has been a significant contributor to the success of the Law School, serving as co-chair of a recent highly successful capital campaign.

In honor of Hempstead, Bodman established the David M. Hempstead Scholarship Fund at the Wayne State University Law School.  The scholarships are available to incoming Wayne Law students who attended; Detroit public high school, underperforming Michigan high schools, historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Michigan Lawyers Weekly Names Bodman’s Damali Sahu a “Women in the Law” Class of 2018

Bodman PLC is pleased to announce member Damali Sahu has been selected as one of 30 lawyers comprising Michigan Lawyers Weekly “Women in the Law” Class of 2018. Selected from dozens of nominations, “Women in the Law” are inspiring and accomplished leaders who have displayed a commitment to excellence in the practice of law. They serve as mentors and give back to their communities.

Over the years, Sahu served as a volunteer mentor at VIP Mentoring in Detroit and served on the Board of Directors as Vice President and Treasurer of University YES Academy. Sahu has particular expertise in lending transactions involving venture capital-backed emerging and established companies in the technology, energy, and life science industries. She has more than a decade of experience in transactions with companies in all stages of growth from seed/early stage to established pre-public stage companies.

Business Attorney Kiefer J. Cox Joins Bodman

Bodman PLC is pleased to announce that business attorney Kiefer J. Cox has joined the firm as an associate based in the Detroit office.

Cox is a member of Bodman’s Business Practice Group. He represents clients in matters concerning corporate formation, mergers and acquisitions, and financing transactions.

Before joining Bodman, he was an associate attorney with large southeast Michigan law firm where he represented clients on a broad range of corporate and finance matters. He also has experience drafting commercial lending and financing documents and has advised technology-based companies on venture capital finance transactions and entity formation.

While in law school, Cox interned with United States District Judge Avern Cohn in Detroit, where he wrote bench memoranda regarding civil rights litigation and contract disputes. As an undergraduate, he interned with United States Senator Carl Levin in Washington, DC where he conducted research and wrote memoranda on economic and foreign policy.

Cox graduated from Wayne State University Law School cum laude and Order of the Coif.  He was a senior member of Wayne Law’s Moot Court and served as associate editor of the Wayne Law Review. He received the Dean’s Scholar Award, the Professor Alan Schenk Annual Student Prize, and the State Bar of Michigan Tax Student Achievement Award.

Michelle Thurber Czapski Appointed to National Foundation for Judicial Excellence Board of Directors

Bodman PLC is pleased to announce that Michelle Thurber Czapski has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Foundation for Judicial Excellence (NFJE), a non-profit organization that provides meaningful support and continuing legal education for state court appellate judges from across the United States.

The Foundation’s mission is to address legal policy issues affecting the law and civil justice system through a number of different avenues including frequent publication of scholarly works, hosting an annual judicial symposium each summer, and engaging in other efforts to enhance and ensure judicial excellence and fairness. Their mission includes assuring that appellate judges receive balanced opportunities for professional growth, which can be lacking in state court systems.

Czapski is chair of Bodman’s Insurance Practice Group and a member of the firm’s Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Group. She has over twenty-five years of experience representing major corporate clients in litigation and alternative dispute resolution proceedings, including complex litigation and class actions. She is master of the bench of the Detroit Bar Association’s chapter of the American Inn of Court and a member of State Bar of Michigan Litigation Section Council. Czapski has been listed in Michigan Super Lawyers since 2009 under Business Litigation, Class Action/Mass Torts, and Insurance Coverage and is listed in Benchmark Litigation as one of the Top 250 Women litigation attorneys in the United States.

Kyyba Xcelerator, Bodman PLC and TiE Detroit to host Pitch Club Nov. 29th at SPARK Ann Arbor

Kyyba Xcelerator, Bodman PLC and TiE Detroit are hosting Pitch Club on Wednesday, November 29th at SPARK Ann Arbor. Pitch Club is a mentoring and funding program aimed at connecting the various ecosystems and smart zones throughout Michigan. Pitch Club has ongoing monthly events that provide entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn from seasoned entrepreneurs and investors. The events are meant to educate, network, inspire and provide valuable experiences for being investable. As part of the events, 3 lucky entrepreneurs will receive the opportunity to practice their pitch and discuss business plan with funding experts, giving them a better understanding the mindset of an investor. Events are hosted monthly on Wednesday evenings in Michigan cities including: Ann Arbor, Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids.

The select pool of the companies chosen to pitch at the monthly Pitch Club events will be provided investment opportunities in the form of presenting to the investment team of Kyyba Xcelerator and TiE Detroit Angels during their quarterly Angels meeting. Investment opportunities will range from $25,000 to $100,000. TiE Detroit Angels funded companies, if qualifications are met, also could have the chance to present to the TiE Global Angel Alliance (TGAA). TGAA is a global platform for funding that exposes startups to a broader investment pool and opportunities to raise additional funds much larger than any single TiE Chapter or local Angel Group. TGAA recently invested $395,000 in Zeto, and $450,000 for Hemex Health from the TiE Global network.
