UHY Cares Charity Poker Tournament Brings in Over $41k

Employees, their friends and associates of UHY LLP, certified public accountants, in conjunction with UHY Cares, the firm’s independent 501c(3)organization, celebrated their 12th annual Texas Hold‘Em tournament on Feb. 7. The charity poker event was held at Petruzello’s in Troy, Michigan and was packed with 175+ players, dozens of sponsors and donors who helped raise funds for several local nonprofit entities.

“We had surprise donations from multiple friends of the firm that we were extremely grateful for,” said Steve McCarty, newly elected national CEO. “Our attendees, donors and sponsors make this event special, everyone is having fun with a little friendly competition and raising money for a number of great organizations in the process. “It’s a great event that receives more and more interest every year.”

These donations come on the heels of the firm’s 50th anniversary in which they contributed $50,000 to 50 local charities in the form of $1,000 donations.

UHY LLP, a certified public accounting firm, operates its charitable giving activities through UHY Cares, an independent nonprofit 501c3 organization. Cares, which was incorporated nearly 10 years ago, was an idea inspired by employees and is volunteer based. Through UHY Cares, employees are able to give back to the community, including helping individuals going through personal emergencies or hardships. UHY Cares Michigan has provided assistance to over 150 local charities and families and continues to grow this list every year.

Local Accountants Sleep Out for Homeless Youth

Recently, a group of young ladies from UHY certified public accountants participated in an event for the homeless. Suzanne Al-Jawadi, Diane Burek, Lisa Gjocaj, Hailee Johnson and Sam Siljanovski slept in cardboard boxes in Detroit with temperatures reaching the low 20s. The sacrifice came as part of the Covenant House Michigan Young Professionals Sleep Out, which Burek is a founding board member of.

This year Tony Frabotta, CEO of UHY Advisors matched contributions from a firm sponsored jean day dollar for dollar, in addition to Burek’s own match. Frabotta is a big proponent of giving back in our local community, and heavily supports employee’s civic endeavors. Burek and her team were able to raise nearly $6,000 with the help of Frabotta, and altogether the event raised around $70,000.

“I am always amazed at the spirit of giving exhibited by our staff both monetary and in participation,” Frabotta said. “Especially for Diane, Hailee, Lisa, Sam and Suzanne who endured the cold winter night in support of such a great cause.”

Over 100 Future UHY CPAs Give Back to the Community

UHY LLP (“UHY”), one of the nation’s fastest growing accounting firms, just finished up it’s summer recruiting and leadership program, UHY Connect, where over one hundred accounting students were given a glimpse inside UHY offices across the country. The program allows potential recruits to get a feel for the firm’s culture and working environment, and make connections with partners, accounting staff and others prior to graduating and choosing their career path.

An important aspect of the program is the charitable component. Connect participants partake in a community service project with one of the firm’s nonprofit clients or affiliates. UHY has a long history of supporting their client’s missions and community goals. They place great emphasis on community outreach from each recruit’s first connection with UHY because corporate social responsibility is a high priority at all levels within the firm. Activities ranged from sorting nearly 8,000 pounds of food at a Michigan food bank to a campus cleanup project in New York.

“Each year we host UHY Connect to allow college accounting students to take a deeper look at our firm and learn all they can about its people, culture and environment. Students work together on a community service project, and participate in panel discussions and a social team building activity,” said recruiting manager, Rina Henning. “We believe it is important to potential recruits to see our commitment to the communities we serve.”
