Accreditation of Walsh Business Programs Reaffirmed by ACBSP

TROY, Mich., July 23, 2020 —Walsh has achieved reaffirmation of the accreditation of its business programs by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners.

ACBSP accreditation evaluates aspects of leadership, strategic planning, relationships with stakeholders, quality of academic programs, faculty credentials and educational support to determine whether or not an institution’s business programs offer a rigorous educational experience and demonstrate continuous quality improvement. It certifies that the teaching and learning processes within the business programs offered at Walsh meet the rigorous educational standards established by ACBSP.

“Walsh’s ACBSP accreditation aligns with our mission to provide a transformative business education combining theory, application and professional experience to prepare graduates for successful careers. We look forward to continuing to uphold these standards of excellence in everything we do,” said Michael Levens, Ph.D., interim provost, chair and professor of marketing.

“This reaffirmation of accreditation is evidence that Walsh is committed to maintaining the highest quality business education for their students for the next 10 years, just as they have done for the last decade,” said ACBSP chief accreditation officer Steve Parscale, Ph.D.

Walsh’s undergraduate and graduate business programs were first accredited by ACBSP in 2010. Institutions must undergo the reaffirmation process every 10 years to maintain ACBSP accreditation. Walsh’s next reaffirmation of accreditation will take place in 2030.

CFA Institute Grants Walsh Affiliate Status

Walsh one of nine Michigan colleges and universities with this gold standard financial certification

Troy, Mich., June 1, 2020 – The CFA Institute has granted Walsh’s Master of Science in Finance (MSF) program the internationally prestigious recognition of Affiliate status. The CFA Institute is committed to leading the investment profession globally by promoting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence. According to the CFA Institute website, “An Affiliated University signals to their students and to employers that their curriculum is closely tied to the practice of investment management and is helpful to students preparing for the CFA® Program exams.”

CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) is the “gold standard” certification in the finance and investment fields and is recognized globally. This significant achievement places Walsh’s Master of Science in Finance (MSF) program in the same company with elite colleges and universities around the world, not just the United States. There are 235 CFA affiliate colleges and universities in the United States, including Cornell, Baylor University and The Ohio State University, to name a few.

“The CFA affiliation sets Walsh and its students apart from the competition and opens doors for graduates to move ahead in their careers.” said Walsh Finance Professor William Greshak. “During their time at Walsh, MSF students gain the knowledge and hands-on skills that will be highly applicable in their profession because our curriculum is directly tied to the CFA candidate body of knowledge.” Greshak is one of several Walsh faculty members who are CFAs.

Greshak said that though CFA learning objectives are incorporated into every part of the MSF curriculum, these are not prep courses for actually taking the CFA exam. The exam, which is one of the most rigorous, comprehensive certification exams, takes at least several hundred hours per year of individual study time beyond a degree.

“CFA certification follows the standards of the market,” said John Moore, Ph.D, CPA, professor and chair of Walsh’s finance department. “A CFA-affiliated program, like Walsh’s MSF, is structured to keep students aligned with the most current needs of the industry and employers.”

The CFA’s affiliate recognition also brings scholarship opportunities to Walsh students to take their CFA exam.

This is not Walsh’s first recognition of educational excellence. Other distinctions include one of the Best Online MBA Programs in the U.S., a Tier One Global Online MBA, one of the Best Online Colleges in Michigan, and one of the Best Online Masters of Science in Finance.

Walsh College will host its second annual Mark Solomon Tax Symposium, featuring presentations on tax implications involving individual health insurance, due process clauses, cloud computing, digital assets and filing issues, on Thursday, Oct. 30, at its Troy campus.

The symposium, named in honor of the late Walsh professor of Taxation and Business Law and director of the Mark Solomon Tax Research Center, will focus on current taxation issues that challenge traditional thinking, introduce provocative ideas, and present divergent issues.

Professor Solomon was the driving force behind Walsh’s tax curriculum, which emphasizes tax research. The Walsh College Library houses one of the most comprehensive tax collections in the country and is used as a resource by tax researchers throughout Michigan.

Tickets are $35 for alumni, $15 for students, and $50 for all others. Registration is required at www.walshcollege.edu/taxsymposium.

The presentations and presenters include:

  • Exploring the Cost of Individual Health Care Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Eric J. Gould, J.D., LLM Taxation, attorney and counselor of Eric J. Gould, PLC, and clinical professor, Taxation & Business Law, Walsh College. Gould will identify the costs of individual health insurance coverage, explore the tax benefits provided under the Internal Revenue Code as modified by the Act and discuss practical planning ideas to meet the costs of insurance and medical care.
  • Michigan Taxation of Flow-Through Entities: How Many Due Process Clauses Can Dance on the Head of a Pin? Marla Schwaller Carew, J.D., LLM, attorney and counselor of Marla Schwaller Carew, PLLC, and adjunct tax instructor, Walsh College. Schwaller Carew will discuss the challenges of applying broader concepts, which have become more difficult and less taxpayer-friendly in the hands of Michigan legislators, as demonstrated by a review of recent flow-through withholding and nexus standards for owners of flow-through entities.
  • Cloud Computing and Sales Tax Implications. Dave DeCew, CPA, manager, State & Local Tax, Plante & Moran, PLLC. DeCew will take an in-depth look at the sales tax environment for software companies. The sales tax treatment of infrastructure, platforms and software will be analyzed based on the most recent court decisions and state promulgations.
  • Digital Assets in the Information Age: Do Your Ones and Zeros Have Value? Bradley Perry, president, Accounting & Tax Student Organization, Walsh College, and Michael Robins. The presenters will explain and define what digital assets are and how to determine whether they have a fair market value.
  • “The Check’s in the Mail,” but Sometimes I.R.C. § 7502 [1] Doesn’t Allow You to Prove It. Jacqulene Brandt. Brandt will discuss the circuit split surrounding the timely mailing as timely filing rule, which governs when documents are received and considered filed with the IRS.
