Browning named among 2021 ‘Leaders in the Law’

Plunkett Cooney partner Charles W. Browning was recently selected a 2021 “Leader in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly (MiLW), an industry publication serving the state’s legal community. This is the second time that Browning has been selected for this honor, having also been named a Leader in the Law in 2015.

Browning and the other class of 2021 honorees were selected for, among other things, their significant contributions to the practice of law in Michigan, their expertise and leadership, as well as for setting an example for other lawyers.

The annual Leaders in the Law awards ceremony will be held on Dec. 2 at the Detroit Marriott Troy. The “Lawyer of the Year,” as selected by a vote of the class, will be announced during the event. All of the 2021 honorees will be profiled in a special section of the Dec. 6 issue of MiLW.

Browning is a partner and Co-leader of Plunkett Cooney’s Insurance Coverage Practice Group, overseeing the firm’s national practice as coverage counsel for numerous major insurance companies.

In addition to this honor, Browning has been designated annually for several years as a Michigan Super Lawyer and has been annually recognized by The Best Lawyers in America since 2010. He is a Fellow in the American College of Coverage Counsel. Browning is also the 2016 recipient of Defense Research Institute’s (DRI) prestigious Albert H. Parnell Award, which is presented annually to honor members who created a particularly dynamic educational program.

Browning is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel (Casualty Insurance Committee (Chair 2006-2008) and Reinsurance and Excess and Surplus Lines Committee); Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (Insurance Committee) and the American Bar Association (Litigation Section and Torts and Insurance Practice Section). He is also a member of the Board of Editors of the Defense Counsel Journal.

Browning has been admitted to practice law in the state courts of Michigan and several federal courts, and he has been admitted to practice law pro hac vice in more than 34 states. He received his law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University.

Legal Publication names Cowan among ‘Leaders in the Law’

Plunkett Cooney partner Dennis G. Cowan was recently nominated as a member of the Class of 2020 “Leaders in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly (MLW), an industry publication serving the state’s legal community.

Cowan and the 29 other honorees were selected for, among other things, their significant contributions to the practice of law in Michigan, their expertise and their leadership in improving the state’s justice system, as well as seeking improvements to the legal and local communities and setting an example for other lawyers.

The 12th Annual Leaders in the Law awards ceremony will be held virtually on Aug. 3 starting at 6 p.m. The “Lawyer of the Year,” as selected by a vote of the class, will be announced during the COVID-compliant online event. All of the 2020 honorees will also be profiled in a special section of the MLW issue that will be distributed beforehand.

A Co-leader of the firm’s Governmental Affairs and Business Planning & Transactions practice groups, Cowan has the distinction of having previously served as President & CEO of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest full-service law firms.

Currently, Cowan focuses his legal practice on obtaining governmental approvals for clients at the local, county and state levels. He has particular experience advocating on behalf of clients who are seeking zoning, site plan and other land use approvals. Cowan also represents clients before state administrative boards, as well as with the Michigan Attorney General’s office.

Additional areas of his expertise include banking law, business law and transactions and cannabis law.

A 1984 magna cum laude graduate of the Detroit College of Law, now known as the Michigan State University College of Law, Cowan has been involved in some of the state’s largest and most significant business deals, including a bid to build a Detroit casino, securing approvals for multi-million-dollar developments in suburban communities, and assisting with the financing package that helped make the city of Detroit’s “Grand Bargain” bankruptcy possible in 2014.

Cowan, who received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts/Boston in 1978, is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association; the Real Property Law, Corporation and Business Law, and Public Corporations Law sections of the State Bar of Michigan; and the State and Local Government Section of the American Bar Association.

During his more than 30 years of practice, Cowan served 14 years as a member of the Royal Oak City Commission. After six years as a City Commissioner, he was elected and served four consecutive two-year terms as Royal Oak Mayor. As a result of his extensive experience as a public official, Cowan offers a unique perspective to advising clients on legal issues related to all levels of government.

Legal Publication names Cooney among ‘Leaders in the Law’

Plunkett Cooney partner Henry (Hank) B. Cooney was recently nominated as a 2019 “Leaders in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly (MLW), an industry publication serving the state’s legal community.

Cooney along with 29 other honorees were selected for, among other things, their significant accomplishments or achievements in practice, outstanding contributions to the practice of law in Michigan, leadership in improving the state’s justice system, seeking improvements to the legal and local communities, and setting an example for other lawyers.

The 11th annual luncheon and awards ceremony for the Class of 2019 was held on April 18 at the Detroit Marriott Troy. In addition, the honorees were profiled in a special section of the April 22 issue of MLW.

A member of the firm’s Litigation Department, Cooney has the distinction of having served for 16 years as President & CEO of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, from 1998 to 2015. Among his responsibilities were the review and management of the Professional Code of Ethics for firm members, including all aspects of the attorney-client relationship, conflicts of interest, advocacy, public service and maintaining the integrity of the profession.

A 1980 graduate of University of Detroit School of Law, Cooney’s legal practice entails nearly 40 years of experience in the areas of product liability, construction liability and commercial litigation. He is also frequently called upon to serve as a case arbitrator and facilitator under the provisions of Michigan’s alternative dispute resolution system. Cooney received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1973.

Cooney is a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and its Foundation, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, American Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan and the DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar.
