Walsh Giving Day Exceeds Fundraising Goal for Student Support

TROY, Mich., Sept. 4, 2020 — On Aug. 26, 2020, Walsh raised more than $63,000 during the inaugural Walsh Giving Day, exceeding fundraising goals and benefiting critical student programs including the Student Emergency Assistance Fund, which supports students who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since Mar. 15, 2020, more than $129,000 has been raised exclusively for the Student Emergency Assistance Fund.

Wash Giving Day featured several virtual events including an interview with newly-appointed president and CEO Michael Levens, Ph.D., and Ask-Me-Anything with Walsh alumnus Jerry Schafer, BAC ’75, retired corporate vice president of worldwide development at McDonald’s Corporation and past interim president and CEO of Walsh. The day ended with Conversations with Leaders 2020: What’s Next? A Look at Markets, Economy and Elections, which featured John Moore, Ph.D., Walsh professor and chair of finance and economics and Leon LaBrecque, JD, CPA, CFP, CFA, chief growth officer at Sequoia Financial and was moderated by Chad Livengood of Crain’s Detroit Business.

“It is through the generous support of Walsh alumni and friends that we are able to provide financial relief for students impacted by COVID-19, offer student scholarships, provide free tutoring and support student organizations,” said Levens. “This Giving Day, those alumni and friends rose to the challenge and are helping students continue toward their educational goals.”

Walsh Giving Day was sponsored in part by Comerica, Dynamic Marketing (and Walsh alumnus Dan Lixie), The Frank & Helen Gofrank Foundation (and Shirley Gofrank, former Walsh Trustee and alumna); Plastipak Holdings (with special thanks to Walsh alumnus, Michael Plotzke, CFO and Chairman of the Walsh Board of Trustees); Genisys Credit Union (and alumna Jackie Buchanan, President and CEO); The George Seifert & Elizabeth Seifert Foundation; and Polk & Associates.

Walsh Retains Gold Level Status as Veteran-Friendly School

TROY, Mich., May 7, 2020 — Walsh has retained its status as a Gold-level Veteran-Friendly School by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) for the 2019-2020 academic year. The MVAA’s Michigan Veteran-Friendly Schools Program highlights institutions committed to offering services and support to meet the needs of veterans or military-connected students.

Gold-level status is the MVAA’s highest distinction and recognizes schools meeting six or more of the required criteria including veteran-specific advising, resources and staff, a system to award credit based on prior military training or experience and a process for identifying current veteran students.

Walsh helps veterans transition from military service to a successful career by providing personalized service and a clear pathway to a degree. The application fee is waived and veterans have access to veteran-specific scholarships, licensed professional counselors on staff to assist during transition and extended payment due dates for GI Bill® users. Career Services advisors help translate military terms, experience and responsibilities into civilian business language for resumes and job interviews. Walsh also offers a designated space for veterans at its Troy location and a student veteran organization.

Walsh Expands Student Emergency Assistance Fund to Help Students Affected by COVID-19 Pandemic

TROY, Mich., March 26, 2020 — Walsh has expanded its Student Emergency Assistance Fund to provide additional support for students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund will provide stipends for students experiencing a financial hardship related to COVID-19 because of a change in income status for themselves, their spouse or their parent (if the student is a dependent). Students must be currently enrolled at least half time, which is six hours for undergraduate students and three hours for graduate and doctoral students. Applications for assistance may be submitted through Walsh’s website at www.walshcollege.edu/financial-aid. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and subject to approval and available funds.

“Students experiencing financial stress see it as a primary obstacle to continuing their education. We have always recognized this at Walsh and have had a fund for exactly this purpose,” said Susan Foley, Vice President, Chief Institutional Advancement Officer. “Resources for the Student Emergency Assistance Fund are urgently needed to support the vast number of critical needs that students are experiencing in these very challenging times.”
