Walsh Golf Event Raises Over $72K in Scholarship Funds

TROY, Mich., June 26, 2019 — Gray skies didn’t keep golfers away from the 28th Annual Walsh Scholarship Golf Classic on Monday, June 24 at Franklin Hills Country Club in Franklin, Mich., where more than $72,000 was raised to fund scholarships for Walsh students. Presenting event sponsors included Fifth Third Bank, Plastipak Packaging, Inc. and Dynamic Marketing.

More than 100 people attended, including David Girodat, regional president, Fifth Third Bank (Eastern Michigan), event committee chair and double Walsh alumnus. Scholarship recipient Chris Gagnon addressed the audience during lunch. Gagnon will complete his master’s program in the fall and already has a position waiting for him at a major certified public accounting and business advisory firm.

“Knowing there are complete strangers who care enough to support scholarships and see students like me succeed inspires me to someday afford others the same opportunity,” said Gagnon.

“Fifth Third Bank is committed to improving lives of people in the communities we serve, including college students like Chris,” said Girodat. “We are proud to sponsor the Walsh Scholarship Golf Classic.”

Alumnus Richard Pearson (’61) founded the Walsh Scholarship Golf Classic in 1991. To date, it has raised more than $1.5 million in scholarship funds.

Walsh College Student Group Earns Three Community Service Awards

Walsh College has received three awards on behalf of its Accounting and Tax Student Organization (ATSO) for its volunteer initiatives supporting preparation of tax returns for low-income families.

The awards are the Masco Community Service Award from the Accounting Aid Society (AAS), for 2,000 hours of service from 100 Walsh students; the Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council, in recognition of exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership, and dedication to improving the quality of life; and the State of Michigan Special Tribute Award.

ATSO encourages accounting and tax students to volunteer their time to various non-profit activities and efforts, focusing on the use of accounting and business expertise. It is just one of many Walsh College student groups adding social, educational, community service, and leadership gravitas to a quality Walsh business education and campus life.

“The initiatives demonstrated ATSO’s enthusiasm for service to others and for the accounting profession,” said Deborah Mourray, academic and ATSO advisor, Walsh College. “ATSO’s efforts positively reflect the high-quality character of all Walsh students and their willingness to become involved in their community.”

She added that it is important to note that students do not receive academic credit for their volunteer hours in the AAS program.
