Walsh College Elevates John Black to Chair of its Accounting, Tax, and Business Law Department

John Black has been named chair, Accounting, Tax, and Business Law at Walsh College, effective immediately, according to Michael A. Rinkus, DBA, interim executive vice president and chief academic officer.

Black, who is also an associate professor of Accounting, had served as interim chair since January 2016.

“John Black has brought considerable vision, leadership, and expertise to one of our key academic departments,” said Dr. Rinkus. “He has the respect of the entire College community with his professionalism and dedication to student achievement as an educator and as an administrator. We are proud that he will lead this important department.”

As a former adjunct assistant professor at both Walsh College and the University of Michigan – Dearborn, Black has substantial experience teaching cost accounting, fundamentals of accounting, auditing, and advanced managerial accounting.

Black earned his Master of Business Administration in Finance from Wayne State University (WSU) and also obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from WSU with a major in Accounting.

Black worked at TRW Automotive LLC for more than 28 years in increasingly responsible positions in financial management and received the firm’s CFO Award. He has also worked at Lear Siegler, Inc. and at Comerica Bank as a senior internal auditor.

In addition to managerial accounting, Black’s areas of expertise include financial analysis, auditing, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Hyperion Enterprise, and SAP-ERP.

He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, and a Certified Internal Auditor. Black is also a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt.

Black’s community involvement has included service as chairman, Redford Township Civil Service Commission; teaching economics to high school students as part of the Junior Achievement program; and volunteering as a tax preparer for the Accounting Aid Society of Detroit.
