Brooks Kushman Shareholder Linda Mettes has been selected to represent the firm as a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s (LCLD) 2016 class of Fellows. This landmark program identifies, trains, and focuses on the development of the industry’s next generation of professional leaders.

The LCLD Fellows Program offers participants virtual and in-person training, peer-group projects and networking opportunities with LCLD’s top leadership and industry professionals alike.

Linda has a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law where she graduated cum laude. She has been involved with mentoring and teaching during her entire career and is currently an adjunct professor at Michigan State University teaching patent litigation.

Brooks Kushman Attorney Named State Bar of Michigan Section Chair

Southfield, Mich. – Brooks Kushman attorney Anna K. Heinl has been named the State Bar of Michigan’s Arts, Communications, Entertainment & Sports (ACES) section chair for the 2015-16 term.

The Arts, Communications, Entertainment & Sports Section of the State Bar of Michigan provides education, information and analysis about issues of concern in the creative sector through meetings, seminars, its state bar website and public service programs. Membership in the Section is open to all members of the State Bar of Michigan.

As section chair Anna’s responsibilities include oversight of the group of nearly 500 members, coordination of the section’s annual business meeting which hosted a discussion on the Detroit bankruptcy and its effects on the Detroit Institute of Arts, and hosting other events of interest to members including a summer social and hot topics seminar. Her focus this year will be outreach to law students to promote involvement in ACES as well as generating interest in other sections of the Bar. The section’s next meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 and will include a special presentation from the director of Lawyers for the Creative Economy services about the organization, which pairs creatives and volunteer attorneys to handle a variety of legal issues.

Anna’s practice involves clearance, maintenance and enforcement of trademark rights and copyright protection and enforcement work. Her practice also encompasses trade dress, internet and IP-related entertainment law. She has experience managing client portfolios, providing clearance opinions, devising filing strategies, negotiating agreements, and defending intellectual property rights through Trademark Trial and Appeal Board proceedings, cease and desist communications, online take-down procedures under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and domain name disputes.

Brooks Kushman Attorneys Named to AIPLA Committees

Southfield, Mich. – Brooks Kushman attorneys Tiffany A. Fidler and Lauren B. Rennert have been selected to serve on American Intellectual Property Law Association’s (AIPLA) Women in IP (WIIP) Law Committees. Fidler will serve as the Social Media Chair and Lauren will serve on the Outreach Subcommittee.

As Social Media Chair, Fidler will assist the Presence & Branding subcommittee with member newsletters, committee reports, branding efforts, and liaise with other AIPLA committees. She will take the lead on the committee’s social media responsibilities and serve as the main point of contact for managing and promoting the group’s messaging through various social media outlets.

As Outreach Subcommittee Member Rennert’s responsibilities include planning the regular WIIP committee breakfast meetings, various community service and international AIPLA networking events throughout the year, and coordinating the annual WIIP Global Networking dinner with women from over 20 countries in over 60 locations. Rennert will assist with finding speakers and coordinating with other countries and their respective organizations to execute a collaborative IP event.

Her practice also includes design patent prosecution and she has experience protecting intellectual property rights in automotive technologies, aviation technologies, alternative energy, optics, and the consumer products industry.

Rennert focuses her practice on intellectual property litigation including matters regarding patent, trademark, copyright infringement, trade dress, trade secret and contract related matters. She also has experience with post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board on behalf of both the patent owner and petitioner. Her practice extends beyond litigation and includes clearance, procurement, maintenance, licensing and enforcement of trademark rights for global portfolios.

The AIPLA Women in IP Law Committee works to facilitate the practice of IP law by women through educational events, networking and mentoring, including a nationwide networking dinner to help connect female IP attorneys in key geographic areas and empower and foster successful professional relationships.
