Walsh College Names Schmidt, Harder to Foundation Board Posts

The Walsh College Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of two local business executives as officers of the College’s Foundation Board of Directors.

Louis Schmidt, Jr., director, The Honey Baked Ham Company, Troy, Mich., is named chair, and Dennis J. Harder, managing director, The Private Bank, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is named vice-chair. In addition, Schmidt has been elected to a three-year term on Walsh College Board of Trustees, the governing body of the College

Established in 2004, the Walsh College Foundation serves as the official fundraising arm of the College and encourages private giving and ensures the integrity of the College’s philanthropy program.

It is staffed by employees of the College and led by volunteers who are business, industry, and community leaders. Walsh alumni comprise 72 percent of the 25-member Foundation Board of Directors.

“The two boards will benefit greatly from the wealth of business experience and expertise these two outstanding professionals bring to the College,” said Ed Gwilt, chair, Walsh College Board of Trustees. “Both are graduates and long-time supporters of Walsh College who are highly respected in their businesses and within the southeast Michigan community.”

Schmidt attended Hillsdale College in the 1980s and later transferred to Walsh College where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance in 1990. He continued at Walsh, earning a Master of Science in Finance in 1997. Schmidt is also a member of the executive committee and vice-chair, Crime Stoppers of Michigan.

Prior to The Private Bank, Harder was a senior vice president and middle market division manager at LaSalle Bank. He is treasurer, Michigan Humane Society Board of Directors, and a former adjunct assistant professor, Finance and Economics, at Walsh. Harder also serves as co-chair of the College’s Leadership Awards special events committee. Harder earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Finance from Walsh in 1991 and 1997, respectively.
